Hi
My defender TD5 2002, 157k on clock, has been difficult to start. Problems started about 3 months ago
Symptoms
Whining fuel pump,
Lumpy tick over
No acceleration
Difficulty starting (intermittent)

Replaced. Fuel pump and filter ( Bearmach), pump has been replaced twice by garage.
Injector harness replaced
The garage said I am also showing an electrical issue fault code but he could not read the code. Could this be an ECU issue.

I've read a few threads but I'm lost as to what To do next
Can anyone help please

Finding out what the error codes are would be a good start. Clearing them and seeing if they come back once the engine has been run is a good idea too, so you can see if they're current or if they're historical. As well as oil in the injector loom and fuel starvation, poor running on TD5s can be caused by deterioration in the various sensors, especially the air flow meter near the air box. Unplug it and see if there is any improvement. I've also had some trouble with a deteriorating crank position sensor which threw up 'high speed crank error' codes and yielded some very large cylinder balance values. But looking for error codes is a big part of it. Trying to work on a TD5 without knowing this is like fencing in the dark.

Hi
I have found a decent land rover specialist about 15 miles from home and I thank you for the info re codes and possible causes, I think the only way forward is to have it read by a decent diagnostic reader. I will update this thread with the outcome, once again many thanks.

Has the red plug to ecu been cleaned out of oil recently? Even after the injector loom is changed you should keep cleaning the oil out of there for a while. It's free so worth a try! Although I'd say it was more likely air in the system :(
