Wanting to know about it looks like, if it works okay.
I'd rather go back to standard as far as possible with mine but it's got some cheap aftermarket thing in it.

When I was putting one of my children in the back I noticed under the drivers seat something saying laser product so it's got the CD changer which I wasn't aware of when purchasing.
I then later also noticed that it said h&k on the driver door speaker.
A fairly nice surprise in our first drive in the disco.

The unit fitted in mine is what's referred to as the "Hi-Line" and uses the Alpine R990 head unit and includes the 6 disc CD auto-changer under the driver's seat and the power amplifier and sub driver under the front passenger's seat.
There are two other installations in the D2, depending on version, the "Mid-Line" which has a single CD slot and I don't think it has the power amp either. Then there's the H-K (Harman Kardon) which is the top of the range and includes the built-in Sat-nav.

As far as I'm concerned, it works well, if you're an audiophile or you want loads of bling then it won't suit you. The Hi-Line has 12 speakers, a mid and a tweeter in each door, a tweeter in each "A" post and a pair of "sort of bass units" in the rear tailgate.
The aerials are etched into the glass of the two rear side windows, the AM aerial on the offside and the FM aerial in the nearside glass. Each is fed through a pre-amplifier.
Without modification, it's not possible to feed the output from an external source such as an mp3 player or whatever.
As I said, unless you're an audiophile it's OK, but remember, you're still listening to music in a steel box and not an audio theatre.
Replacement head units do occasionally come up for sale on the bay.
Some members have replaced the head unit with more modern equipment to enable reception of DAB and also connection of external sources. I've achieved that by using the original fittings and a DAB adapter unit.

I don't often have music on when I'm driving but I like it to sound nice when it is. I'm definitely not an audiophile though.
There are what appear to be tweeters in the front pillars and the back windows also have what looks like heater elements through to defrost so I guess those would be the aerials.

At work so I went out and had a look...

Under drivers seat, busted up

Mine's a '98 d2 gs, cd changer was an optional upgrade. I don't even think you got sat nav back then though.

I've seen a head unit like yours available online but I don't think that was what came fitted to my model. I'll check through the owner manual when I get back in the morning.

Good write up by the way, thanks :D

I went 'retro' with mine, so that I could use the under seat CD changer. The PO had fitted a new JVC one when he sold it, as the original was on the fritz, but it was only one CD and just didn't match the rest of the dash. Oh, and the pinky red lighting against the green of the rest of the dash at night was a bit vom inducing.

Here's the original style one that I refitted: -

It's the lowest of the low option on offer at the time (Jan 2003), but it works fine with the CD autochanger.

Its the cd-changer that packed up on mine - quite a common problem as far as I can see from research. I am happy with Radio 2 most of the time, but the wife has reverted to using the tape player. Now that IS retro!!! :D

Yup, been going through my cassettes too! Quite fun listening to tapes with just 'various' written on them and seeing what on there. Always thought cassette players should come with a holder for the BIC biro......
Normal, chrome or metal tape? Happy days.

Checked the book, said r660, r690 and r990.

Sorry Brian47, my mistake, that's 990 in yours. I thought it changed with the facelift model.

I can see the part number on both the changer and amp, xqe100240 and xqk100210 respectively. I don't suppose anyone has theirs from the head unit do they ;)
