Good Afternoon LandyZone peoples.
This is my first post on here, after months of using the site to search for info, so Hi to all! :)

I bought my 2003 3 Door Freelander TD4 "Sport" last summer and over the following months I fixed and fettled what appears to be the common niggles... Dead MAF, Cloudy Headlights, Blown Speaker, Split Boost Hose, Stuck Thermostat, Knackered Diff, Leaky Brake Cylinder... the list is pretty long but nothing too unusual by the looks of it.

Whilst I've been fixing I've also been making a few changes and subtle upgrades along the way.

Some of the changes I've made I either couldn't find any information on or it was difficult to find accurate info...
So I thought I would start a project thread to share what I've been up to, and offer any advice incase anyone wanted to perform similar changes in the future.

OEM+...

I hate the whole "Stanced Thing" and the way people bang on about it, labeling things, generally the same as their mates and following a rough set of "Expected" guidelines...
E.G - VAG cars, rubbing the floor on Porsche wheels. Or Jap cars with wheels pointing at obscure angles.

So I was reluctant to use "OEM+" in my title as this is often referred to in the Modified Car Scene.
However the meaning of it covers what a lot of us like to do to our motors, make them that little bit better, or, "How it should've left the factory!"

OEM+ stands for "Original Equipment Manufacturer +".
This term originally comes from the automotive world to describe the customization of a car in a subtle way, (mainly) using parts and accessories from the same manufacturer or the same group (Using Audi parts on a Volkswagen for example) . More generally it means customize a car very discreetly, with a close look to the original, playing on the details. In contrast of tuning and its extravagance.

So, please, forgive me for the title... But bear with me and I'll show you exactly what I've been up to ;)

Hi Rob.
Sounds interesting, I for one will await your report hopefully you have taken a few photo's along the way, always nice to see what upgrades other FL owners have done even if they are tweaked ones that have been done already

So does improved mean External or internal? lifted or lowered? Bigger rims with thinner tyres or smaller rims with fatter tyres? Faster better and handling or more off road capable?

Ya gotta love that Freelanders are suitable for all of the above. :p

So here's a list of the jobs I've already completed including some that are currently a Work-In-Progress...

  • Aux. Heater rewired to work as a Remote Preheater (My Favorite Mod by far!)
  • Replacement MAF, Clutch Master Cylinder and RHF Roll Bar Link... *Boring*
  • Headlights restored and fitted with all LED Bulbs - Further work coming on these...
  • All Badges replaced with Black and Silver Land Rover ones (Grille, Boot, Rear Quarter and Steering Wheel). Sport side decals removed.
  • "Land Rover" Bonnet lettering replaced for Gloss Black version
  • Range Rover Sport wing vents painted black and cut into Bonnet, Functional
  • 20mm Hubcentric Wheel Spacers all round
  • Wheels refurbished in BMW Orbit Grey - Work-In-Progress - Pick these up on Saturday!
  • 235/50/18 road tyres replaced with 225/55/18 Yokohama Geolandar G012
  • Intercooler hoses upgraded to black Silicone
  • EGR Removal and Blank
  • Plastic intercooler-Intake manifold hose replaced with Aluminum tube
  • Custom air intake, from RH bonnet vent - Work-In-Progress
  • Aftermarket Air Filter
  • Re-map
  • Synergy 2A - Currently set to #2
  • Digibooster
  • Digital Boost Gauge
  • 'A' Pillar trims re-trimmed in dark grey Alcantara
  • Steering Wheel retrimmed in Smooth leather and dark grey Alcantara - Arrived today!
  • Replacement Leather Gear Gaiter and Knob
  • Intercooler, Rad, Tow Hook, Exhaust Backbox & Rear Subframe "Blacked Out"
  • Prop, VCU, Diff & Driveshafts currently removed... Due to a cooked Diff on a trip to Le Mans last year!
Jobs to complete in the coming months -
  • Custom Bi-Xenon Projector headlights. Sidelights relocated to Front Fogs. Work-In-Progress.
  • Replace Rear Drums and Shoes... *Boring*
  • Remove and clean Intake Manifold and Ports
  • Fit EGT Gauge
  • Upgraded Intercooler - Weighing up a few options currently...
  • Custom Exhaust Centre Section, maybe Stainless Backbox
  • Plastic dye all external trims - Arches, Bumper Trims etc
  • Paint Silver Speaker grills Black
  • Paint faded Silver interior trims in Orbit grey
  • Double Din Headunit
  • Re-trim Headliner and Sun Visors
  • Replace Tailgate
  • Sort out rust/stonechips on rear quarter/sill leading edge
Jobs currently on my mind -
  • Re-fit all 4WD Drivetrain
  • Gearbox Rebuild?
  • Upgrade all speakers?
  • Re-trim seats?
  • BMW 3-Series Intake Manifold... Will it fit... Would shorten Intercooler hose Route...
  • Build an M47R/M47T Hybrid Motor... o_O
Bit of a brain dump. Needed to remind myself of the things I've done so far... Not a bad list.

There's a lot on there which I guess most people with a Freelander have done already!
Let me know if there's anything you're particularly interested in and I'll go into more detail.
If not I'll just waffle on about bit's and pieces.

Bi Xenon head lights are an interesting mod. I've been thinking about a similar thing myself. My wife's BMW E46 CI has bi Xenon lighting. It's good by comparison to the Freelander H7 bulbs, even when equipped with Nightbreakers. The BMW lamp shells look a similar size to FL1 facelift, so something could be cobbled up.
How are you going to arrange the auto levelling for the Xenons?
It would make a huge difference to the light available on the road.

Lots of pictures are always helpful;)

Yep, the Xenon Projectors give such a bright and sharp beam.
I tried Nightbreakers and really wasn't impressed. I've currently got LED Bulbs fitted and they are amazing, but I'm very conscious that they are pretty bright and could dazzle, given they are in a standard light bowl designed for halogens.

There are companies which make "projector" units to retrofit into H4/H7 headlight units, the decent ones are designed as Bi-Xenon, however they can fit a standard H1 bulb... So you could fit them with a decent Halogen and have the benefit of the sharp beam but no worries of legalities etc.

The latest LED bulbs are almost as good as xenon, however they don't have the warm-up issues, no huge ballasts and generally aren't quite as bright.
So I'm thinking of fitting the projector with an LED bulb, to give a crisp bright beam pattern, but no worries of self leveling etc. Then if there's issues come MOT time I can drop a halogen bulb in :)

I'll be sure to take plenty of pictures of this, as I've not seen it done on a Freelander yet...

Projector lights are something that I've been thinking about. They do need to be designed correctly for decent light output. The wife's old Astra GTC had halogen projectors. To be honest, they were dreadfully poor on light output. They used H9 65 Watt burners, but still lagged massively behind my H7 Nightbreaker equipped FL1 lights. I'll follow this with much interest. I'm not a fan of LED in a filament reflector, as beam control is poor.

Exactly that - The beam control is poor at the moment, I've currently got them dipped 1 setting. If I was selfish I wouldn't care too much, but I hate being dazzled by oncoming lights, so I don't want to be one of those guys...

The projectors will hopefully arrive by the weekend, then I can start playing with different bulbs to get an idea of pattern control and light output etc.
I'm pretty sure homologation states that if using an LED bulb with <2000Lm output then no levelling or washers are required, food for thought :)
