Help!
Series 3 diesel, 1982.
I'd put a thread recently about my front brakes binding on turning them in reverse so i've replaced cylinders & shoes & springs but now its nearly worse!
I have the snail adjusters set for minimal expansion & still binds.
Perhaps this is just a case of bedding in?
I then removed the drum and the new 'wear' shows up on a couple of inches on the lining at the cylinder side.
What should I do?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Andy in Sunny 'Norn- Iron'

Could it be the wrong type of cylinder?
I replaced with a type with 'plunger' on both sides but I see on Paddock website there are types with plunger only on one side.
Could the double one be too wide for my drum?
I just ordered what the old ones looked like but poss this was wrong to start with..especially as the adjuster is at minimum to start with??

The old cylinders were binding only on 'reverse' direction.
Both fronts are the same ie binding.
Got rather smelly on first test run. (the barkes, not me!)
I will take some photos tommorrow if the rain goes!
Vehicle is not taxed at moment so cannot go too far to let them bed in, apart from the church carpark across the road where i'm often seen test-driving vehicles!!

I don't know any churches with carparks!!! sounds like a great place to test drive an old n landy!

Minister Boring but carpark great!!
Back to my brakes....Landie is Jan 1982 and wonder if she is mix of models as got the post 1981 kit from Paddock.....
Could anyone tell me if the brake cylinder 243296R (which i've fitted) is wider between the pistons than 243302R (the pre 1981 kit) ?
This might explain my problem as even with the snail cam adjusters to minimum I'm still binding alot on BOTH fronts.

Andy - I know its a long time ago but did you sort out the brake issue? I have exactly the same problem now after a rebuild. All the parts came with a Paddocks kit so should be compatible but brakes are binding up especially when the wheel is turned backwards both sides! Cheers

Have you chamfered the top leading edge of the rear/ trailling shoe if not the edge catches the drum and the drum applies the shoe.
File a 45 deg angle on the edge, some binding in reverse is normal. What manufactuer are your brake shoes?

+1 for chamfering the edges of the shoes, all four edges. I had a similar problem when I did my brakes and it turned out the the shoes were not sitting quite square to the back plate. You have to adjust the post thing, can't remember what it is called but it is the pin or post that the body of the shoe rests against. The book says set it with a set square but I just kept fiddling till the drum turned with out binding.
