Question for owners of ex MOD Land Rovers

Hi,

I went to look at an ex Army 110 which I was very interested in, until I checked the TFL website and found that it would not meet the low emission zone exemption criteria.

I checked some other random ex Army models (just looked some up on various websites and input the reg numbers) and found that some show as exempt and some don't!

After further reading I found that others have been caught out by the TFL website giving incorrect information, and receiving fines for using their vehicles in London.

I think I'm right in saying that it all depends on the class of vehicle that is shown on the V5 form when the vehicle is first registered (as a civilian vehicle), some are recorded as cars, some as light utility.

Could some owners of ex Army models please let me know what class of vehicle they have shown on their V5? What I want to find out is if any are down as a car or light utility vehicle?

Mine is as a 4x4 utility. Typically if it has the full rear tub it'll be utility, if it's a county style with rear forward facing bench, rear doors etc it'll be as an estate or something and lez compliant. I have seen one driven within the lez but not a clue how he avoided lez unless he was crafty when it was registered, or maybe a resident?

Both my Wolf & Shorland are Light 4x4 Utility, my Pig is a Box Van & my Shorland prototype was also a Box Van. Sorry I know nothing about TFL, I live over 200 miles away. Is it not a question of whether it is petrol or diesel that is the deciding factor?

Petrol or classed as a car avoids lez charges. Its £100/day, don't need any more reason than that to avoid London

Thanks, yes petrol vehicles are OK it's diesel that's the problem.

The odd thing is that if you look up some full rear tub diesels and input the reg no into the TFL check thingy on their website, some will come up as exempt! If you put the details into the 'check by vehicle type' it comes up as liable to the charges. Go figure…..

Very confusing. I had read that some have been registered as cars even though they don't have rear windows or seats though.

That's it. People who buy them and register the landy themselves may put estate and get away with it because no one will check.

When I registered my 110 G/S soft top I put "4X4 Utility" on the V55 form, but it came back as "Estate" on the V5.
When I check mine it comes back as LEZ exempt.
LEZ applies to diesel commercials, so if you are registering a direct military release Land Rover it is worth while registering it as an estate.
Fortunately LEZ is a wasted worry as I live in the Grim North.

Get a v8 snatch then no problem.
