Hi all.

I have been slowly doing up my 1987 110 and after being away for about 6 months I took the old girl out for a run around the block the other day after about a quarter of a mile I felt and heard a Klunk klunk, judder judder so I went straight back to the house with it still Klunking/juddering but 50 meters from the driveway I heard and felt a loud bank from underneath the chassis. I jacked her up, both rear wheels off the ground, wheels off, pulled out and changed the bearings and seals, the half shafts seem to be in good working order, took the rear diff or end drive unit cover off after draining the oil, no bits in the oil, Put it back together and drove down the end of the drive 25 meters all good but then at the end the juddering started again I'm not sure where to go now. The prop shafts could do with changing and I am happy to do this, but after watching numerous you tube videos I'm thinking that it might be the differential or planetary gears. Any thoughts or ideas would be great or any tips on how to figure out before I open up a job I might not be able to complete.

what did you find? Nothing expensive I hope..
I changed the front and rear Prop-shaft and the noise disappeared, or so I thought. It reappeared. I checked the hand brake and this seemed to be catching so I replaced the whole parking/hand brake and so far the noise hasn't returned. Still not quite sure but the noise is gone.

Yes they were a tad worn and also a little oily. I bought a new drum, cable, shoes and springs, the whole shebang really. If the noise reappers I will post an update but I have thrown her about a bit since and she seems to be good as gold.

you changed the transfer box seal as well?
errmmmm nope... I had a leak previously coming from the oile breather pipe and this was intern blowing oil back over the gear box, transfer box and so assumed that the oil was from this. Trying to remember now but how hard is it to change the seal?

not really, you'll need to go back into the drum brake and strip part of it away, again.. Also you'll need to get the propshaft flange off the box end, you may get some oil weeping. You then use a screw driven into the seal and pull the bugger out.
clean out the hole and fit the new one using a socket or something the same diameter as the seal just so it goes in evenly and sits flush with the surrounding aluminium. Before you fit the seal wipe some grease around the inside where it meets the shaft and around the outside of the seal to help it slide in. The reason for the grease on the inside is to stop the seal being damaged upon the first turn of the shaft.
you could try jacking the back of the bus up high enough so less oil drips out. Failing this. Have a look inside the drum housing after a week... If no oil! No seal required. It just a precautionary measure to protect your new handbrake setup.

phew!

Hey Mark. Thank you for the advice I might take the drum off this weekend and have a look as its been three weeks since I changed the hand brake. Much appreciated..

its not a problem at all. It's nice to be able to help even from a distance. My series 2a had no handbrake because of it trans box seal...its a common land rover thing.:p
