Before taking my car to a dealer and throwing cash at the problem i thought i would ask forum members for their diagnosis. Who knows i may try to get fix the problem myself.

My 2006 freelander diesel is reluctant to start. Symptoms are:
- normal warning lights - including glowplugs illuminate and then go out.
- starter motor appears to engage, turn engine over for 1 second, but then stops.
- i have repeated the sequence several times and each time the glowpulg indicator comes on then goes out after 5 seconds.

The fuel filter and pump were changed less than a year ago. Car has 60K on clock.

If it stops cranking, then the starter solonoid contacts are probably on there last legs. Does the alarm LED extinguish correctly? If not it could be an immobiliser issue.
My money is on the starter solonoid though. There's a specialist on Ebay that can supply a kit for less then £20.
This is assuming it's a Freelander 1 not the FL2.

New information.

For the first time ever i lifted the hood. The area above the dipstick has been smeared with oil. Other parts of the engine are clean. What could cause the crankcase pressure to force oil to come out of the dipstick? And, could this cause the electrics to be disabled immediately after cranking the engine, or just two unrelated problems?

When was the crankcase filter changed? Over pressure of the crankcase will force oil out the dip stick.
If the starter is covered in oil, then the two could be related.

It's wise to check under the bonnet on occasion ;)

First off is to change the PCV filter, while you are at it you may as well change the air filter, oil filter and oil, also do the pollen filter link below .

With the oil being pushed out of the dip stick check the alternator to see if is as been contaminated if so you could be looking at a new one ?

It is possible to steam wash the alternator but leave it ti dry the do get water in them but oil is different and will stay there but do as nodge says check things as well as changing that filter.
