Hi,
I haven't been on here for a while as I moved house and the landy has been parked up for a while. Its a G reg 110 CSW with a 300 tdi engine.

Since I bought the landy a few years ago there has always been some white smoke on start up but then after 5-10 mins of running it stops smoking.

Took it for an MOT today and it failed on emissions, so thought it might just need a good run even though I start and run it for 20 mins every week to keep the battery topped up.
On the way home white/blue smoke started pouring out of the exhaust and it kept loosing power or stalling. I managed to limp it along for a mile or so and then gave up. It would run normally for a few hundred yards (good power and no smoke) and then the engine would start to die (felt as if I were engine braking) and white/blue smoke would pour out of the exhaust.

The AA came and towed me home. He had a quick look and said that the injectors seem to be working OK and he doesn't think its the head gasket.

Do any of you have any suggestions of things it may be that I can have a look at before I get it towed to a garage?

Any help or suggestions would be very gratefully received.

Paul

Take off the intercooler to inlet manifold duct (easy) and check for oil. If the turbo is leaking on the fresh air side, the oil will end up there. Note, oil will run down if the engine has been stood for much time at all after the 'incident'
Check the headder tank for emulsions (oil and water mixing)
Check what the exhaust actually smells like - burning motor oil is a foul smell, and smells somwhat different from overfueling (same as under-airing really!)

Those three are easy to do - from the results of them, you can check other things with more sense

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies.

Temperature is fine and there is no obvious water in oil or oil in water. I removed the inlet manifold and it was full of black crud, although the pipework and intercooler doesn't seem black and oily.

I decided to bite the bullet and take the head off. I can't see anything obvious apart from the inlets are just as cruddy as the inlet manifold. Gonna strip the head and give it a good clean along with all the other parts.

Any other suggestions as to what might be wrong or to look for?

Cheers
Paul

When's the last time the timing belt was checked/changed? Could be something as simple as it's jumped a tooth or two. When was the last time you changed the breather on the side of the cylinder head? Personally I would have checked a few other things before pulling the head off it so at least you could start it and see if there's any change but it's a bit late now

The crud in your inlet manifold is caused by the egr. Block it off when refitting the inlet manifold.
As Chris says, check your turbo hoses as they could be delaminated and sucking flat when you take your foot off the accelerator.
