Hi, does any one here know anything about these engines in a series landy.
Are they a good conversion or not, any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

I've not been around here for that long but I've not heard of putting a VW engine in a series Land Rover before.

Most people will rattle on at you about just using more modern Land Rover diesel engines instead of "going foreign". (Despite some historical links that some perhaps might not want to credit)

Thanks Strech for your reply, i am not thinking of putting one of thoughts engines in a 2A
There is one for sale on ebay that i liked and i was just trying to find out about the engine
if they were any good or not.

I don't know if they are any good or not. They seem to be about the same vintage as the Mercedes OM60X diesel engines. The Mercedes diesels of that vintage are pretty good. Way more refined than the OM61X series before them but they don't have the long lasting "legendary" reputation. The combination of alloy head and ferrous bottoms tend to give head gasket trouble in the end (although a lot of this trouble could come from incorrect coolant usage).

For buying an engine of that vintage I'd be looking into spare parts availability. As I say I have no experience of VW products but I get the impression they don't support their old products to the same extent Mercedes do. Mercedes spare parts availability is pretty astounding (almost as astounding as some of the prices!). There's only one other brand that I can think of that comes almost as close to Mercedes spare parts availability - that's Land Rover (and partly why I'm here).
