Hi all happy new year.

I am looking to do a suspension lift on my 110 soft top and wondered what the cheapest way to do it and information on what's needed would be good.

Many thanks

Is it actually worth it? With a military 110 soft top there's every chance you might be riding slightly higher than usual anyway. And no matter how big the suspension lift, it won't make any difference to clearance under the diffs. Not too sure what you would achieve apart from a very small improvement in your "angles"...although obviously nowhere near a 90!

I know this forum sometimes is a bit "I want to do x...help me" and you get lots of "no, you don't want to do that" replies like mine above. However years ago I did a 2" lift on my old Disco, and although it looked quite cool, I had to fit longer brake pipes, springs, shocks, bump stops, cones etc etc etc (£££££s), the road manners were ruined, the steering went wooly, it ate front propshaft UJ's and wasn't really any better off road than a well driven standard vehicle.

The main reason for doing it was so I could fit proper tyres around the 265/75/16 size...which go straight on a Defender anyway with no mods.

If you want to make it better off road on the cheap, I'd be spending the money elsewhere personally.

That's good advice I do want 265 75 16 tyres for it as I have rims just need to sell my wolf wheels with good mitchein tyres to pay for them. It is quite high more at the back than the front though.
I'm in the process of prepping the bodywork at the moment but stuck at what colour

If you want my honest advice stick with NATO green. Unless you are going to do a full body off respray, colour changes are bad news IMHO, as you'll forever see bits of the old colour in shut lines, front of bulkhead etc. NATO green is very easy to spray as it's matt, it hides dents well, and you can also get a good brush painted finish too, and works well on an off roader. I also think it's a bit of a shame when ex-mil motors end up really "civvied". It will also be worth more looking fairly original too.

That said, here's mine, ex RAF 12 seater, which does not look at all military any more. Pic of how I got it, and how it looks today. Paint is the same, just cut back and polished. There's still lots of the shiny deep bronze green visible in places like the interior for example, which is annoying, and next summer it's all coming apart for a proper sort out and respray.

When I bought it, I was just after a cheap station wagon, this one just happened to be ex-mil when I started poking around it. It was already nowhere near original, however, if it had been on original wheels, with the original paint and engine I would have just kept it looking military and done more of a faithful "restoration". However it had a 200Tdi in it and was destined for a different look and use, and it's not what I'd call a serious off roader as I'm a bit precious about it (although it often goes off road as a family fun car)

If you do colour change, think carefully about what will look good with your hood. Springs look fine to me as is.

Yours looks nice come up good after.
I do like the nato green but I don't have a compressor to spray it as I thought brush would look crap. It has no rot on it at all chassis is mint just needs tiding up

Not sure if you realise but there's hardly any difference at all in diameter between your 7.50s, 235 85 16 (my truck first pic) and 265 75 16 (my truck second pic)...literally a few mm. It's only the width that's different. If you are wanting to off road, you actually want narrower tyres generally for UK use.

Mine look big on the second pic because I have wheel spacers, which I needed (as will you if you go down that route) to fit alloys to that age of 110.

If you are wanting to go down the alloys/265 route I have some for sale, cheap. PM me if you want more details.

Could be more of a pain then just for a wider look on my 110 then by the sounds of it.
Your in rugby mate I live in surrey unfortunately

Well driving to rugby from surrey for a set of wheels in a land rover 2.5 na is a mission if they were closer I'd have them. Yea a surrey meet sounds good to me you read my message wrong :(

I've seen the off roading bobtail boys meet by my mother inlaws in the garage at givons grove leatherhead

As it happens I'm in Surrey this weekend visiting my old dear. Let me know if you want more details/pics on the wheels, I could potentially take the Landy on the trip and bring them down.. I'll be honest, I think your truck looks better as is on the wolf rims but happy to help out if I can.
