just in the final stages of getting my landy up and running after full engine out rebuild job, put battery in today and the starter started smoking, i know the starter needs replacing, well i do now! but was wondering if the positive battery feed that goes to the starter motor selonoid can that be wired any way around?? and any one got a starter motor for sale which they would post to Stockport, Manchester??

if yer starter is smoking before yer even turned the key yer've fooked up some wheres with yer wiring

Wow ......

Like is he saying he just connected the battery and the starter motor began emitting smoke?

Or did it start smoking when he turned the key to fire it up?

Either way it isn't good.

GULP! Yeah its before i even turn the key it just starts to smoke!! taken the starter off and it looks like the internals are all rusted up which carn t be good! just looking about now for a new starter! and im gonna compare wire routing to my mates landy see where i have messed up! i saw that the selonoid could also be faulty

its unlikey that the solenoid has fooked up with the contacts closed. the usual thing with them is badly coroded contact which dint let lecktrickle past. i think you may have messed up at the ign switch. unless you have joined the two small terminals on the solenoid together.

the rusty starter is another problem as you shouldn't have power there till yer turn the key

Well Mr Slob,

Any guesses what he's done with his wires?

Has he maybe connected the battery main cable to the nut AFTER the solenoid?

OUCH ....... !

if the starter is as rusted up as he says it's probably a short in the starter somewhere - dissconnect the starter, if the starter still smokes you really do have issues, but make sure the smoke isnt coming from elsehwere
