Landrover 90 1990 fitted with 200tdi from a disco

So my saga continues with the 90.

About 500 miles ago I had the head gasket fail, I had the head skimmed but not pressure tested, about 2 weeks later I had water in the oil again (White sludge in the rocker cover etc, etc). I then stripped it down again and had the head checked again including having it pressure tested and all was good no problems at all with it.

I rebuilt it all with new gaskets again and now 200 miles later I have the same problem, water in the rocker cover, cyclone filter full of sludge. and to top it all oil leaking out of the turbo.

I haven't started to strip it down yet as it is beginning to annoy me know and I am starting to loose faith in it. Just looking for ideas and inspiration as to what has gone wrong, the turbo was refurbished 18 months ago so why that has oil leaking through it I don't know.

Do I just take the engine out and replace it with an unknown unit, take it out and rebuild it from ground up having the block all checked for cracks and curing the leak on the rear seal at last, go down the 300tdi route and fitting a new engine, set fire to it and be done with it or just sell it as a project?

HELP!!!!!!

Sorry to hear of all your troubles. I have no idea what the cause could be. I think If I were in your situation I would either strip the engine and rebuild it or get a recondition one. I wouldn't want to change my 200 tdi engine for anything else. I think they are great engines. Mine is still going strong at the moment but when it does go I will definitely get a recon block. I think it also depends on your long term plan, like how long you intend on keeping the 90..
Good luck, hope someone comes on here hat can help you out.

That will take a minute or two to think about. I cant see any reason a cracked block couldnt produce those symptoms.

But in the meantime. Does it run OK? Does the oil level rise? Is there a lot of crankcase pressure?

It runs fine except spewing oil out everything, doesn't overheat at all, the gauge is an aftermarket with its own sender unit which has been tested with an inferred temp gun.

Not had chance to have a good look but when I got to work oil was dripping all off the steering links across the front and I mean a lot of oil.

You need to clean it up, let it cool down. check levels, restart, and try and find out where it is coming from. . It may not be as much as you think, hot oil goes a long way.

If the turbo is leaking oil too, then that does sound like a pressure issue. On mine it was as simple as a blocked hose.

Sorry to hear about this Ivan, could the oil in the turbo be coming through the crankcase breather into the turbo that way? I'd be concerned about diesel run away if it's putting a lot of oil through it...

Did it over heat first time around? If the head is off what state are the piston bores in?

It did overheat the very first time around yes, it is all built up still at the moment but when the head was off last time the bores are not scored at all but very little honing makes left. The radiator is brand new when I first rebuilt it after the overheating issue. Cyclone breather is quite blocked with oil water residue (mayonnaise).

Had a look this morning and I have oil dripping on to the top of the exhaust manifold (Front of the manifold) from what looks like the underside of the inlet manifold?

Looking at the spray pattern on the underside of the bonnet it looks like the oil has hit the fan and put it everywhere, all over the power steering pipes, steering damper and such like, I can't for the life of me find any leaks?
