Grimmer it will be STUCK fast with carbon / oil /dezzzel & all the rest of the crap that appens in that pot The only way is the top end off to fix it right ! Just thinkin out of the box here Are you changing ALL the glow plugs ? If so why not break another glow plug & see IF you can find a LONG screw that will screw into the tip & see if you can eeeezzzzzz the tip out ? Slowly of course

If it is not chugging through the hole it is still sealed. Put a little more plus gas in whilst it's running and wait. Keep rag over it and watch your eyes it will come out eventually. Like a bloody bullet.

I got it up to temperature and still no movement, so I'm going to have a brew and let it cool down then try again, I've kept a rag over the hole, I iz stupid, but not that stupid.

If it wont come out, how important is it for starting, mine starts fine without glow plugs, I guess your winter temps are pretty cool though, but if the other 3 are working ok the engine should fire up just a bit lumpy. Just put the old bits back in to hold it all together, would be better than reefing the head off just for something so simple.
All with the proviso that the detatched bit cannot drop in on the piston.

Shirley you know someone near you with a set of extractors?
They do take a bit of getting out, but an extractor and a long handle has never let me down in over 50 years!

I've got a couple of plugs sheared off level or just below the head (on me itsafishy) - any suggestions or links for getting the sods out without having the head off would be gratefully received

The top hasn't come off completely it's still attached by the internal wire - I'm afraid to break them off in case the bottom drops off into the pot - is that likely?

Meanwhile, no loss of compression.

D/N so you have ALL the thread out BUT your left with the tube & the tip left in the head ?

See post #49 if that doesn't work and it will more often than not it is head off.

Just been in garage to break a glow plug F**k do they take some breaking So how they break in the head God knows

Ahhh, thanks... they're snapped clean off level with the head (the body is) - so it's a head off then

For some strange reason, remarkably easily with very little force.

So the 1s in your motor D/n still have thread in the head ?

Yes that's right.

The top is still attached (internally by wire) but just spins around.

The 1 that snapped on me years ago snapped below the thread So left the tube & tip in head Taped the tube m6 & used bolt & m8 nuts to draw the tube & tip out 1s the tip was clear of it's little hole it came out easy

I've seen YouTube stuff where you can tap these out and use a magnetic tool to catch the swarf but it looked a bit hit and miss to be honest.
