what a job! is this a record?

Just spent four days changing all my airbags, and hated every minute of it, what a crap bit of design, every single piece i tried to remove was rusted/seized solid but i got there in the end. The biggest surprise of the job was the date stamp on the old bags, 1996 so the've never been changed ! i bet the new set don't last twenty years, i can move onto doing the shocks now and the rear exhaust box that seems to be totally rotten, more money!!

I know your pain, but thankfully my D2 only has 2 bags! 3 if you count my mrs!

I did all my bags in no time at all! The "R" pins were a bit of a mare, but only at the rear. Turned out the top plate was slightly raised, so stopping the "R" pin from going all the way through onto the flat of the plate... Anyway, I engaged the use of a 3 foot long pinch bar to force it down a bit and the pin went through no bother at all.

I did the fronts in uder an hour and the rears, because of the plates, took a couple of hours all told. I didn't even argue with the brass entry where the air pipes went in, I simply chewed them off with a flat screw driver, making sure the pipes themselves weren't damaged.

I would happily do any one of them again at the side of the road with little thought of any hassle. Guess I was just really very lucky. She's a clean old girl is George

It´s one of the easiest jobs, not even had to raise the car or remove parts for access. Just spray the bolts with oil the day before or so (i did not but i live in a dry country).
Having the right tools and a bit of planning usually go a long way.

i had all the right tools and plenty of planning went into the job, lots of oil was liberally sprayed before the job was started, but the thing fought me every step of the way, but i suppose it was to be expected with the original bags on there, everything has been covered in grease so in twenty years time when i change them again (lol) it should be a lot easier!

You complaining about it now but once you get used to the vehicle, they do get under your skin and the love affair will start.

Mine started many years ago with a Series One 86" since then theres been a S1 80" V8, S11a/3 V8, 110 HT V8 and My current ride a P38 2.5DT.

There have been other vehicle affairs with the likes of Ford Cars, Land Cruisers and Jaguars, but once the green oval has been tasted you might as well accept it.

Now if I could only find a cheap 101 Ambulance to restore....

No complaints here, i fell in love with the thing the moment i drove it home from the seller, that was 29 miles before it blew up and i had to fit another engine!! but it was too late by then, i was hooked, i've spent far to much money/time on the old girl but she's part of the family now, i was just surprised that the airbags had lasted twenty years!

don't give me idea's! i think i'll drop that in a conversation with the other half and see how it go'es down, i've already told the kids not to expect anything when i pop my cloggs as i'm leaving it to the dogs home! i've also told all of them that i've got my send off planned already and it includes such things as "going underground" by the Jam being played as my coffin is carried into church, they all think i'm joking, only wish i could see their faces when they find out i'm not!!

Your gonna need more than people to carry the rr into church?? ;-)
