I have a 2000 Freelander 2.0 turbodiesel. It's a good car, but it's quite annoying to drive, because you'll always want to keep it above 2,000 rpm because of a loud resonance sound on lower rpms, just as when you're pushing a car on a rpm where the engine doesn't have enough power to pull - it's just that this one does have enough power to pull the car at 1,500 rpms on the straight.. It pulls just fine, but still sounds like it doesn't. I haven't driven another Freelander, but there must be something wrong with it.. any ideas?

Swap the tyres front to back. If you have larger( newer) tyres on the front then the difference between the front and rear will cause the VCU to bind , this puts a load on the engine that results in the noise you describe.
I spent a few quid trying to solve this one until I replaced all the tyres at once and the problem went away.

I replaced all four tyres exactly two months ago, with four brand new 215/70-16" General Grabber UHP. I also had the wheels aligned (or whatever it's called in english) at the dealership.

The car doesn't use a lot of diesel either, seems just like it should be. I would think the VCU problem would cause it to use a whole lot more?

Do the VCU test ( see other posts) if its not conclusive take the prop off to confirm. I'm now out of ideas.

I lied. Before I solved my noise with the tyre purchase i was going down the route of a faulty MAFF which according to Roveron can cause this symptom. Drop him a line he's on the MG-Rover.org forum. Very nice man.

could it not also be a headshield/exaust issue? when you say resonance you refered to it as a sound, not a vibration feeling, or is it both? and is it only when moving?

It's a sound, but it's the deep kind which makes the car vibrate. At least that's the way it feels for me.

I've been thinking the exhaust thought before. My dad once replaced the rear muffler on a Peugeot with a cheap copy, and afterwards it felt about the same as the Land Rover does. He had to replace it with an OEM muffler just a few days later.. anyone experienced anything similar on diesel LRs?

how about the noise when stationry? try gently increasing the throttle, or place in 1st, handbreak on and just slip the clutch gently increasing to near stall, that shoud vibrate the car. do you get the noise then?

Tried that just now, and there's nothing when the car is stationary..
Guess it may well be drivetrain/wheels then..Altho you've had four new boots on, just for elimination swop the fronts to back.Even same make /pattern boots can sometime have different manufacturers tolerances...HTH;)
