Freelander 1 handbrake light staying on.

Hi.

On a 02 Freelander 1. Any suggestions as to why my handbrake light won't extinguish. Just the one light not the 3 amigos. Have had the handbrake switch off and it works correctly. ABS works in as much as you can feel it pulsing if you brake on grass. Have had it plugged in locally and no errors are showing.

Thanks for this. Yes, fluid level fine and clean. I was coming to the same conclusion if indeed this is possible. Will change it and see if it solves it.

Try unplugging the harness plug from the brake fluid reservoir - it is a simple on off circuit. If stuck on (probably is) then unplugging at the reservoir should not extinguish the light - note - This is presuming that it works on failsafe where the switch in the sensor extinguishes the light and removing the plug will illuminate the light (so in the event of failure or wiring fault it will be illuminated. In that case if you short the two terminals of the plug (with plug removed) with a bit of wire the light should extinguish
The sensor is Part No. SJL500020. (about 18 quid)

If you remove fluid with a syringe or poultry baster, you can then remove the sensor and clean it which usually works. - use de-natured alcohol / meths / or Isopropyl alcohol. then rinse with clean fluid.
I would also consider changing the fluid in the whole system unless spotless. Should be done every two years regardless of mileage. on a freelander with its ABS / HDC TC etc I would do it more frequently as the car gets older., but at least every two years.

Quite right Joe. The fluid level sensor works in reverse. No connection puts the light on. It's easy enough to link across the connections in the plug to prove the the circuit is working. A link should put the light out. An open plug will put the light on.
 
Tried that, and sadly the poxy light stays on. The previous owner (now deceased) apparently took the hand brake switch apart and failed to find fault but I guess I need to check myself. When I find it I guess the same would apply, i.e. I should be able to short it out to establish if that is the guilty party.

You probably have a wiring fault in the harness of either the brake fluid level switch or the handbrake switch.
I would check at the ABS ecu terminals - however - you may not feel confident in doing that
You could however measure the voltages at the handbrake switch terminals, and also the brake fluid sensor terminals.

Ya it’s snapped on the end as it comes out the reservoir ?
Must have done something but can’t remember or think what
The bonnet cable as been snapped since September !
Only got round to change that today ( fun job ) as I have gone down with the virus
Only changed the fluid In July
Best wait till get some more fluid

Hi On my Freelander 1 when I take the handbrake off the light on the dash sometimes shall stays on. When I give the handbrake a nudge the light goes off. Sounds like the handbrake switch needs a slight adjustment. Is it adjustable and how do I get to it to adjust it?
