I am trying to find out where I can buy a Gates 1489 thermostat, but which ever web site I go on ask for the vehicle registration and then all they show is the original thermostat or a cheaper version.
I have tried "mister-auto" and "rock auto" with the same results".
Any help please.

It's available on Ebay or most motor factors to order.
You'll need some plumbers silicone grease to fit it too. The pipe where you need to fit the stat is about 5mm smaller than the stat. This will mean using plenty of force to get it into the correct position.

I asked this question previously but didn't get a definitive answer I thought I could rely on.

My stat on my TD4 is lazy, rather than failed. It takes around 16 miles before I get any decent heat and the indicator rarely goes above 4 minutes to 12.
In Winter, that decent heat is no longer decent. It is fine for chilly mornings as we are getting currently in the UK.

So, my stat has not failed totally but is incredibly slow to produce heat. Can I do the Gates stat mod if my stat has not completely failed?
Won't they work against each other causing problems?

They can't work against each other. Your factory stat is stuck open, which is the common failure mode of them.
The Renault 5 in line stat will do the trick.

Just one more question then.

My stat gets up to around 4 minutes to 12, Others on here have worst results.
I assume my stat is slightly open compared to others?

Just under the mid point on the gauge is acceptable, providing it's not a 20 mile drive to get it there. Mine is at working temperature in 3 miles.

The sensing bulb would go downwards in the picture above. So bulb towards the engine. The sensing bulb actually enters the plastic T piece on the TD4 auto. ;)
Thanks mate - Mines a facelift auto and has that piping arrangement - first time I have seen that pictured on ours.

Hi Nodge,
When you say Bulb end in the T junction does that mean the Brass bit and not the wider metal bit. I am in the middle of trying to fit the darn thing which I ordered yesterday and recieved this morning, but boy what a tight fit it"s going to be on my 2003 TD4 Auto. Is there a different, wider hose I can buy sometime later to replace the original hose.
Cheers

I think Nodge said it was tighter in the auto. It slipped into the hose fairly easily for me. So to speak. :p
Did you check the link I posted?

Maybe someone can confirm if it is the same way round in an auto but I think it is.

Yes, thanks for that, but I think, and I haven"t a clue why, but I think the hoses on the Auto and smaller than on the Manual.
