Timing belt broken, I think...

I replaced the timing belt myself (may have been the cause to begin with) bur as I mentioned above it was running smoothly and then all of a sudden the strange noise and the engine stalls... it was a new belt with tensioner. The only thing I can think of (without having taken the cover off) is that I didn't tighten the tensioner enough and it worked it's way loose as we did about 200 km of rainy season dirt roads which are quite rough.

Never the less we are stuck here for the voseeable future in a village with no campground...

What configuration of sprockets / pulleys did you have?

Could you have made the mistake of replacing the idler with the current version, without replacing the crank sprocket with similar?

(originally the idler had a ridge, and the crank sprocket did not - current config is that the idler is bare, and the crank sprocket has the rim)

A setup without a rim on one of them will cause the belt to wander / ware / catch, but probably not that swiftly.

Hi julian, have the right configuration ridge on the crankshaft pull and smooth on the idler.
 
Have taken the cover off and it is worse than I first thought....

The belt is shredded but not broken, the bolt holding the cam sprocket on, however, broke and that caused the sh*t to hit the fan... "only" 3 bent pushrods and as far as I can tell no damage to the rocker but I have a piece of bolt in the cam shaft, a guide hole that's now a bit looser that it was and a cam sprocket that can't be reused... the only thing I can think of is that I didn't tighten the cam shaft hub to bolt to the correct torque when I replaced the seal and that caused stress on the bolt which it shouldn't have..

So where do I go from here? What should my next steps be? Look for a replacement motor?

I know wot your thinking ! that it will be tight ! but it wont be trust me

Though what about the somewhat stretched out guide hole? I doubt the guide will stay in now without the addition of some liquid metal...which I'm not sure would be a good idea to begin with...

I'm a bit scared to take head off, those bolts on the manifold look like they would love to break off not to forget the turbo but without taking the head off there is no way to see if we have more damage right?

Gary your in the middle of no were :eek: so your gunna have to suck it & see :rolleyes: If you can get that stud out your halfway there ! New belt New pulley New pin for guide hole or is that to do with timing ? push rods stick it back together & see wot happens :rolleyes: If it dunt work ring work & tell them you've been kidnapped:eek::eek::eek::eek::rolleyes:

Been travelling for 1 1/2 years there is no work to ring anymore.

Newpin for guide hole or is that to do with timing ?
Good question! the pin is ok the whole is a bit stretched, though i imagine it has to do with the timing, as far as I know its there to ensure the pully can only be put on one way. But I am sure others know better than I do.

Believe the pushrods are quite soft you might be able to straighten them enough to get you out of there.
Can you get the belt and cam parts delivered to where you are?
 
Personally, depending on how ****ed you are, id drill out the bolt, and just reassemble the lot, and hope for the best.
Id imagine that, if you can get the belt, you can get the pushrods, but, as above, ive heard of them being hammered straight in an emergency.

With regard to the enlarged hole - ive not messed with the cam seal on any of ours, so ive not taken the sprocket off myself, but, once youre somewhere more suitable, could it be drilled and then fitted with an oversized pin? (again, ive never looked at the part, so this may not be applicable at all)



If you have taken the rocker assembly out, does evreything turn freely now? My concern is the possibility that somthing locked, causing the cam sprocket to snap off, rather than the other way arround.

I should be able to get parts, there is a landy mechanic 2 hrs from here who also sells parts so perhaps they have some things in stock already and we don't have to wait a couple of weeks before we see if the valves are screwed.

With the bent pushrods and rocker assembly removed I checked to see if I could budge the crank and I moved so easily i thought that something had to be wrong..but then without the pushrods there should be no tension and it should turn easy right?
 
I dont even know if the cam followers would fall back down after the first revolution without the push rods - if they dont, then you would just be spinning a shaft on a bearing (i think - ive never tried it)
 
I cant remember if you can see the seats that the push rods sit in by looking down the channel? Ive heard that they can get damaged.

I suspect you cant see them. If you put a (straight) pushrod back in, and push down on it gently whilst rotating the cam, hopefully it all feels ok?
