hi guys having major diffs with rr just spent 330 quid on a new ignition set up for the steering column to now lock and won't release.
Any ideas???? Plz this vehicle is making me hemeroage money quicker than I can earn

Why did you buy new ignition lock, was it because the key wouldn't turn ?
If so then you most likely have the steering column solenoid failure that is very well documented if you google L322 key won't turn in ignition. There are a few remedies now other than replacing the whole column.
I'll try and find a link for a forum I have been watching regarding this matter if that is the problem you have?
Has the key been synced to the new ignition barrel which I think needs to be done?

Thanks for your reply holidaychicken
The car would not start a few weeks ago as the key wouldn't turn although steering had not locked so we took out ignition barrel and by passed it so it just turn with screw driver which worked grand.
I then ordered a new barrel from Land Rover/bmw Germany from my vin no .
Fitted it all together yesterday and now the steering column has locked and won't release.!!!!
It's all brand new original land rover parts I have used .

saint v8 is the man in the know when it comes to this and many other things, i take it the key fob operates the central locking and turns off the alarm ok?
when the key fits into the ignition it should unlock the steering before anything else happens as there is a transponder in the fob that talks to the barrel, the barrel tells the steering to unlock and when it does that it gives the ignition barrel the all clear to allow the key to turn. if the transponder isn't talking to the barrel then nothing will happen.
You haven't had the new key apart and dropped the little plastic transponder out ?

i can only find how to sync a key as below but i am guessing you cant get your key to position 1 and i think this is only to sync the remote not the transponder

Cheers HC I have already sent Saint a msg so hoping he gets back soon , I never got a new key cos the barrel was cut to my key .... Would that make a difference?

To be honest I am running out of knowledge,
Whether a battery disconnect would help but in very rare cases as in basically mine only a battery disconnect loses the immobiliser sync which is a T4 or faultmate job.
The steering should unlock before they key even turns, the key doesn't even need to be in the lock, the fob just needs to lay on the ignition lock and you should hear the click of the steering lock.
I'm losing track a bit, why did you buy the new barrel ?

Mechanic had said barrel was in bad shape so had to get a new one and also little terminals on ignition switch were badly corroded....

maybe talk to the supplier of the new lock to see what they say, hopefully saint or somebody else on here will be able to help but as far as i can tell you have done the right thing by ordering the new kit from a dealer and maybe check with them that they have programmed it for you as that is a separate service for what i can tell

Found this on Rangerover.net really interesting piece on this dreaded problem anyone with more knowledge elaborate on this.
From a guy rattler 1975

Dealer will not sell solinoid on its own although the guy on the rr site has repaired three of that specific type using a stronger magnet inside solinoid ....
Rangerover claim to be unaware of this fault:mad::mad::mad::mad:

As I said on your other thread you don't have to repair anything just remove the pin/plunger I posted a picture of and everything works fine except the steering lock. It is a common fault here and the LR dealer will tell you this is the cheapest solution but they cannot do it. I may have been mistaken on the actual location of the pin though, mine went into a shop for a water pump as I didn't have time to do it and I asked the guy about this issue as it was happening to me occasionally he said no problem we can sort it out, when I collected the car he gave me the pin which I assumed came from the switch but i may be wrong so need to check and all has been well so far. I managed to get hold of a complete column the main issue is getting the aluminum cover off the motor as it is held in by 4 roll pins which go into blind holes so drilling then out is the only real answer if you can get this off and the pin is in there just remove it and put everything back.

Bit the bullet guys and bought another column I am going to recon the other to have for future.
Thanks for all your help guys .
I will post my fix when I get it done
