Not sure what year yours is but when my 2008 did the same the work around this was to remove the inhibitor plunger from the ignition switch (steering wasn't locked) everything works fine now. The wife's 2009 S/C just developed the same problem whilst in the dealer and they are replacing the whole column assembly 6250.00GBP fortunately under warranty!

Thanks for your reply RR Qatar....
I just replaced a whole new ignition barrel ,switch etc from Rangerover .. It started fine then went to move the vehicle and the steering locked and won't release !!! The barrel was cut to my key from land rover Germany according to my vin no.
It's a 2005 td6 auto 3l

Can you not strip the old switch and remove the plunger (if it the same as mine) and put back and test? If I remember correctly it is all down the communication from the transponder around the switch to the ECU failing or a bad connection in the ECU
Basically two or three components/ECU's not talking to one another allowing the various bits to do there job, usually you will hear several clicks when you insert the key as the inhibitors open allowing the key to turn and lastly releasing the steering lock.
If you can remove the plunger the key will turn and should cause no further issues well for me so far anyway.
Have a look at the attached which was from BBS with another work around and there is some info on rr.net I think also on here there was a guy in Dubai with the same issue, think it was spiggy tokes or similar but I may be wrong???
