Wiring DRL's on front Bumper to something?

HI there,


I have just received my new front bumper with DRL's. I plan to fit this on Sunday. The only thing worrying me is wiring up the DRL's. I need to wire them in somewhere that will turn them on automatically after the engine is switched on? also wiring them so they turn off automatically when other lights are switched on?.

I'd appreciate any help (preferably with pictures).

Easy one this, there is a couple of stalks , left hand side of the steering wheel, you want the short one, push it down once during daytime hours and you now have DRL's, no need to fit anything.
And the beauty of this is you also get red ones on the back as well, much much better.

Top tip, if driving conditions are particularly bad push the same stalk all the way to the second position, you now have two sets of DRL's on the front.

You need a 5 pin change over relay. Use the NC (Notmally Closed) contact to power the DRLs, and a feed from the sidelights to the trigger coil. When the side lights turn on, the change over will activate, and DRLs extinguish.

Typical pin connections would be:
Pin 30: main power in (ensure this is ignition controlled as it will keep the lights on after the engine is turned off)
Pin 85: earth
Pin 86: sidelight trigger
Pin 87: not used but covered as it will become live
Pin 87a: to DRLs

Has a "follow home" function too in that the lights remain on about 30 sec after the engine is off, and as is required dims the DRLs when the sidelights are on.

As above, just connect the unit to the battery terminals and then the DRLs, they will illuminate when the alternator is turning, there's also an output wire from the unit to connect to the side light circuit to dim the DRLs... which is a requirement on new vehicles fitted with DRLs..

Seffy / Discool - I would fit it the the Battery terminals but like we all know, in a Defender the battery is located in the passenger side beatbox. Is there anything else directly connected to the battery I could tap into? Ive heard mentions of the Alternator on other forums??. The kit the lights come with wire that connect the the DRL's one supplied with a white wire guessing to connect the the headlights to dim or switch them off them headlights are active?. and then the wire go off similar to Suffy's Car LED DRL Relay off amazon. Then has a 5amp fuse located half way up the red and black wires I'm guessing meant to be connected to the battery or other part.....

No offence intended, but if your struggling with the simple instructions of what to connect to each pin of the relay I mentioned, then maybe you should leave the electrical side of it for someone more competent?

No worries, your welcome.
 
Don't connect any electronic control unit directly to an alternator. The DRL unit is designed to connect across the vehicles battery terminals so install the unit next the battery, because of your batteries location I expect you will have to extend the wiring to both light units using similar size wire.
Depending on your DRL unit there will be a white or yellow or both depending what additional function u require. I forget now what was what as I fitted mine two years ago.

You could instead, if you don't wish to use the unit, is to wire the DRLs via an ignition switch controlled supply so the lights are on when the engine is running, that supply will be be via a relay connected to the side light circuit which will remove the supply to the DLRs when side lights are on.
