I have swapped 15" and 16" wheels on my 04 K Series no bother so not sure it's an issue. Can't be too hard to pull all the bits you need off a dead K Series. There's plenty of them around.
Interesting mate ? - so, you have changed a 16 inch wheel with the larger brake discs etc down to a standard 15" wheel with absolutely no issues ??
Joe

edit - seems like - for comparison - the larger are the 277 mm vented and the 'smaller' are 261 mm solid discs. Obviously the caliper size will also dictate wheel fitting....

Kenneth Williams at his best !. :) kids of today - pah ! - ;) - don't even know how lucky there aren't...:D

The kids now live through a time of PC madness as opposed to genuine comedy and info based on life how it was (and should be !) without outside interference,...... - the greats like Tommy Cooper and Benny Hill... I shed a small tear for their passing

Thanks guys,
will defo be looking into one wheni return from hols in sept. Just thinkin it wud be nice to pull up at the lights and **** of the boy racers in their squat vws / seats/pugs etc ****es me off it takes that long for them to crawl over the speed ramps which over here has practically killed every town and wrecked umpteen suspensions track control steerings etc. Yes wish I had kept the rs it was some yoke 1800 blue print bda engine with a quaife gear box and and quick rack steering, stuck to the road like **** to a blanket and when you hit the noisy pedal it squatted down and ate tarmac was great for leaving black lines on the road. Even had an opel gte manta and a Talbot sunbeam 1600Ti again wish still had them as they are all pretty much extinct with the rally scene and any that are available are extortionate prices. So as you can see i'm looking for grunt more than off road capabilities. Discovery too big and range rovers don't appeal to me though I ain't knocking any ones choice of vehicle. Just thinkin i'm losing the plot as i'm now also looking for a rag top z3 or mx5 when the summer fad wears of and those midlife crisis blokes realise that the summer only lasts about 3 days. So the wish list is now a freelander and a rag top. Having previously owned a very comprehensive tool kit worth||£ks and given away free to an uncle i'm also rebuilding my tool kit just ordered a new gasless mig and delivery man just dropped of a set of sip air tools and 2 collapsible bollards for front of garage and end of the driveway though would need to sort the locks on the garage doors as they are never locked and the amount of gear that is in it. So as you can see I'm all over the show at the min and when i'll get a chance i'll stick a pic of my dumping ground { garage } up and maybe with a few harsh comments it will shame me into cleaning it out as at present can't even get the mountain bike into it. Next purchase has to be a decent output compressor as the wee Clarke I have won't run the air gun as it hasn't the puff or tank capacity for a constant min 9bar flow. I'm actually flicking between here car ads and pinterest to get ideas on possibly adding a second air tank for capacity. As its raining here now i'm going to pull the bike stand into the conservatory and service the 3 mountain bikes and the road bike while the missus is away shopping, although I have to say she's pretty laid back where that's concerned. Air tool kit. Any ideas on what type a propane torch { plumber type worth purchasing just as a heat source for stubborn nuts don't really need an oxy/acet set even though I am a bit of a tool junkie or maybe just a tool { before some one else says it } So guys out to clean bicycles and adjust brakes and gearing whilst it's raining and get the red wine ready for later so I can lay back and look at car porn and dream. Again thanks for all your comments and no doubt I will be torturing you all for advice even before I purchase and defo once I do.
Cheers guys if it doesn't smell, drink fuel, burn oil break your heart and bank balance then it's fukn boring.

Propane is utterly crap for heat removing stubborn fasteners etc- oxy acet' is the only way really (you CAN get inductive units buy probably WAY out of the price range dude !!!)- you can get small oxy acet' sets - also ANY SO CALLED 'gas-less' migs are simply wire fed arc welders ! (AND ABSOLUTELY totally crap) - sorry mate - but. !
Air tools are absolutely dirt cheap off ebay - they will last you a life time for normal home mechanic use. !. ---- compressor ? just add an old propane / butane 13Kg bolttle or similar. if output is low depending on tools you want to use..... constant use windy tools take the most - air sanders et al - the rest of the stuff is fine for windy guns and similar. - if you want an orbital sander buy an electric one !.
The pic you show is a typical cheapo utterly crappy set... go for the MAIN tools only - a couple of windy guns - 1/2 inch and 3/8th angle - forget the die grinder crap.
A decent blow gun (extend it if needed with brake pipe !)
You don't need a lot.... just don't buy a box of crap you will never use mate !
Joe :)

You won't need to heat many items on a Freelander. I've used the Oxy on the Discovery more than the Hippo. Much better off getting a decent socket set with single hex bits and a decent breaker bar ;)

I had a Sunbeam TI and and an Avenger GT with the Tiger kit on it. I still have the GT, rotting away in my garage. I'll get it back on the road, one day!!

I've never had oxy and up to now haven't needed it, a plumbers torch is OK for most things.
As for gasless welding, it is horrible but most welders are gas/gasless so invest in a bottle of gas and convert the welder to gas as soon as you can.
+1 on the hex sockets and breaker bar but also get a rattle gun, either mains 240V or air if battery is too expensive.

+2 for the 6 point sockets, I have 1/4 and 3/8 drive sets both teng tools, I have had the 3/8s drive set for over 20 years and never broken a socket or rounded a nut. I have sheared bolts but if its that stuck its not going to undo anyway.

thanks folks,
the air kit came and not really up to much, will keep it as spare set. Just got a delivery from amazon are there any other good reliable suppliers { though i use amazon as I can top up with gift cards and its secure since getting screwed on ebay with a bogus email } of 2 sets of teng combo spanners, set of sealy torx spanners, 2 teng screwdriver sets mech/elec, teng impact driver hammer end one i'm looking for a good socket set. I have a 3/4" drive gedore set from my old job with ratchet tbar and breaker bar, and a couple of sets of draper 1/2" sockets and a couple of 1/4" drive sets. think the drapers are ok but prone to slipping and skin removal. would it be worth investing in a teng set or is there a better make. The son works in an engineering firm who use all snap-on gear and they do a scheme where they get the tools up front from snap-on and its taken auto from wages so might ask him to sort some stuff and i'll reimburse him. Have been looking at a few adds and have seen some nice cheap motors including discos { too big for my purpose though may end up going down that route if these lads start looking da to tow boats and jet skis all over the place } so for now it's back to building up the kit, clearing the crap { that might come in handy sometime } outta the garage floor painted and cupboards and shelves repaired. Oh if I go down the freebie route would it be wise or otherwise to look at the v8 , if it needs an engine rebuild at some point I don't mind as this is not a time limited project. So thanks again for the help info I've plenty more questions to ask as i'm drawing up a project list of parts etc and price comparisons so i'll be back to pick ur brains on suspensions etc for both the disco and freebie.

cheers

I have a snap on ratchet and breaker bar through work for my 3/8 drive Teng set. The rachet gave up years ago but the sockets have been faultless for over twenty years and they have had some serious hammer over the years. 6 point sets are a god send. Snap on are fantastic tools but expensive.

Bahco socket sets are very good, I think better than Draper Expert but great value for money. You can always tell a good socket set by the ratchet. The Bahco one is nice and smooth with high resolution. Snap On are probably better but you need a mortgage to buy them.

Forget Snap on it's just overpriced standard quality stuff.

Oh you might struggle to find a V8 Freelander. The V6 was the largest engine available:)

Bahco over Snapon any day. Twice the quality at a quarter of the price;)

thanks
was thinking bout snap=on last night and the price of their gear is crazy but I suppose its a deal companies can use as a tax perk maybe ?
was meant to be v6 but hit wrong button and didn't read before posting doh
ordered a bahco set 1/2" sockets there from amazon from an add that popped up as something which may interest you based on your purchases { fukn cookies }

Hope they're hex sockets, I suspect they are.
I love our Bahco socket set and if I had the choice all my tools would be Bahco.

what you think of this buckin Chinese will copy anything without shame
http://cars.aol.co.uk/2016/08/05/fake-range-rover-crashes-into-real-range-rover-in-china/
The Chinese have been doing it for years.
I have an air rifle sold as a Bam B20. However it's almost a clone of a German Weihrauch HW95 costing 3 times as much.
Sure it's not quite as good as the German offering. But the genuine HW95 isn't 3 times better either. After some fettling, my B20 is 95% of the German gun and much better value.
Not everything out of China is bad. Some of the legalities are a bit dubious however.

Well folks,
haven't been on great form lately for anything so plans are pretty loose @ the min. Went of to benalmadena for 10 days for a bit of a battery charge and a colour so I can blend in with all the newbies around town. Anyhow came back home and decides I wouldn't mind changing my car from current astra 2.0cdti. Decided I might like a new insignia as owned one previous to the astra and loved the driving experience of it, plus the misses didn't like driving it which was a bonus. Went into local dealer and had basically decided on the vx line sri. then the owner came in and we got chattin and he said to me ye they're going all out with deals on them at the min as they are bringing out a newer version late 17 and haven't announced it yet. So I ended up with a new AMG line a180 merc for Halloween [ can get insurance on it for 2 younger drivers ] which leaves them with something reliable when out on placements from uni. Any way took a head stagger and bought a mazda mx5 from the garage that motd the wifes car when we went on holiday which was just motd, inside immaculate, spare wheel never used but the usual problems of blistered arches and some nomark has run a screw driver up the back wing right into the metal. So that's project 1 { hes keeping it for me for a bit at no cost ] then to relly fuk me off my mum had a slight stroke after her brother died the morning we left for spain so have been running up and down to Craigavon zoo with her. It all comes in a big pile at once. Still I have went off on one but still want the hippo project and have decided the 3 door with a petrol engine is my swing to but haven't decided whether pre or facelift. Can the bumpers and lights be interchanged easy. Anyway on another wee point, got chatting to a guy who has a Porsche cayenne in the shop the other morning who's a car nut too and was talkin about feelanders and stuff and he happened to mention he was breaking a mg? rover with the 1.8 petrol kseries engine that has been re-mapped, with all stainless plpes? and a stainless exhaust and he was offered £18.50 scrappage from the official gov recycler in Belfast. So with a few jars swallowed over the weekend i'm going back tomorrow to see can I steal it of him for a couple of quid so i'm going to go arse about face and buy a replacement engine before I even get a get the hippo if notjing else I can rebuild the engine and do any upgrades and then drop it into whichever one I get. So folks as you can see I've got issues as one of my sons says and the mrs just thinks I've lost it and need signing in to bluestone for a while. As I said to them this is my new job with long hours . no pay and a grumpy fuk for the next 9 months so build a bridge and get over it. { in jest} so looks like I'm headin for a 1.8 petrol and will be torturing everyone for their knowhow and expertise. sorry for ranting on and hijacking the forum but it is a great way to see everyones thoughts, project and experiences with lrfls and know what I;m letting myself in for. So for now just sittin down to watch tramp vs killary 2 and by the way us and Russia are squaring off over Syria I mightn't need a fl, as they say in Russia mosgo and i'll get the pics up as soon as I take the plunge for the ridicule. good night/mornin

Is there any car you haven't considered/bought? :)

Be a tad careful about the MG, it may have been remapped - but the ECU may not work in the Freelander and if it does your security/immobilisation won't work fully so your insurance, as well as going up for a modded car, will go up again.

Plus it may be a mapped VVC engine - but it won't exactly set the world on fire in a Freelander. I'm pretty sure you won't get great satisfaction out of it. The only way you can get satisfaction out of tuning a K Series is to put a Turbo on it. It'll be an instant change - but once again, that's about all you can do to it. As an ongoing project, well you're back to just fixing head gaskets!

The V6 is a lovely engine - drove 1 for the first time a couple of weeks ago and its a very pleasant experience. Once again, not sure what you can do to it other than perpetually trying to stop it overheating and pouring copious amounts of fuel into the tank - not exactly creative cash usage for your project.

The more I think about Freelander - the more the L Series is the ideal setup for almost all scenarios! For your requirements as a project its super :) When you get it, you can spend some time giving the engine some TLC - but going forward as a project, your work on it won't be boring fixing of faults. Unlike the other engines, there are all sorts of performance changes you can make to it - there really are loads of options for you to have a look at and play with. Its never going to be a Veron, but you can via a cocktail of changes almost double the engine power to to around 200HP. In Freelander form, the L Series is quite a bit slower off the mark than the K Series, but in Rover car form, they are very close, and a bit of tweaking leaves the K Series for dust (well actually in a cloud of smoke). So there's all those things to play with - and the engine bay on the L Series has good access to tinker around in - the K is OK, but the KV6 is comparatively a nightmare.

As has been said as well, the L Series are the early cars, so basic and rather utilitarian. Great scope to add what ever you want :) This fella's had great fun turning a couple of L Series into his project cars....

https://www.muddymods.com/pages/about-us

Depending on what you want to achieve as well, you add the fuel into the project as well. The L Series injection system will allow you to bung almost anything that'll burn in the tank. So if you want to start processing cheap used chip shop fat into fuel for your car, the L Series is the way to go - try putting anything other than premium diesel into a TD4 and it will spit its dummy.

Just some thoughts!

Only bloody stupid Irish git would buy a K series Freelander knowing all about them.

Mmmmm, sounds very familiar. :p

If you don't mind spending a few hundred quid more you could have a low mileage 04 or 05 car so no need to change bumpers etc.
In fact by the time you replace umpteen bushes, fuel tank cradle, brake disks etc it would be no more expensive.
