Today I went to start up my 200tdi Defender and the ignition got stuck all the way on. The engine started but the starter kept turning. I was able to get the ignition turned off with considerable effort, but it took me about 30 seconds. Now I can not get the engine to start at all. It is turning over but not starting. The ignition switch appears to be working since it causes the starter to turn the motor over. Any ideas on where to start in trouble shooting this? Replace ignition? I'm due to move in 2 weeks and this could not of occurred at a worse time.

If the switch physically jammed then I would look there first, there are different switch contacts for the 'ignition' (fuel cut off solenoid) and starter. Could be that one contact has failed in the switch (and caused the switch to stick). If you have a multimeter (or bulb) you could check for 12 v at the fuel cut off solenoid with the ignition switch in the 'run' position. I suspect you will have no power there, if that is the case take the steering column shroud off and check the back of the switch, you know you have power to the switch (the starter spins) so if you get no power out of the 'run' contact then the switch looks to be duff. From memory (but do double check) I think the 'run' contact will have a white wire attached.

Check you have a 12v supply at the stop solenoid. If you don't, which I suspect is the case, drop the column shroud off and have a look at the wiring from the rear of the switch.
It may have melted.
To get you going you can run a 12v supply from the battery to the stop solenoid, it should run then but you will have to disconnect that wire to stop the engine, or stick a switch in line on it.

Thanks...very helpful. I will check all of that this evening. I think I will run up to the local wrecker yard and grab another switch as well.

The mechanical key switch is slightly pricey new in Defender terms anyway!
The plastic bit on the end , the switch bit, is cheap new. It's held on with 2 little screws. Remove the clocks for better access.

How do you get the ignition off? The fasteners clamping the ignition to the steering column do not seem to have any sort of bolt head for a socket or slots for a screwdriver. I did confirm that the plastic ignition switch at the rear of the ignition is broken. Was hoping to remove the ignition to make getting to the plastic switch easier.

You can knock the plain ends round with a cold chisel to loosen them. They are designed to make removal difficult or anybody could Rob the truck quick smart.
You don't need to remove the switch to get the plastic bit off its just awkward. It's held with 2 little pozi drive screws.
From memory, steering shroud and clocks pulled forward gives you room to work.
Make a note which wire goes to which terminal .
Edit- just looked at your pic, in my mind's eye I didn't think it looked like that but it's been a long time since I removed mine. Maybe I cut the bolt shanks through? I completely stripped my landy down so maybe I had room to get a grinder at the bolt shanks? Dunno.
Best course of action is improving access to them 2 screws.
I seem to recall that the lowest of them 2 screws is the most difficult to get at and I think I didn't even replace that one, just the upper one, 14 yrs later and nowt has come loose or dropped off.

I drilled them out. What a pain in the A** this ignition is. It looks like the spring in the switch is what has caused my troubles. Hopefully the new switch I ordered will remedy this. Just in case, I'm gonna pull an entire ignition out of a junker as back-up.
