In terms of the box I think I did contribute to my gearbox failure by pouring a normal Dexron IIIG oil in it. So it took about 4 months to put that nail in the coffin.

Did you go for a flush or change in the end?
 
The box is back in so is the transfer case with prop shafts and whatever else was there the cross member and heat shields.

Now change the cooler, bolt the TQ to the engine, fill the oil and then start which I will film just in case I will miss that self destruction. :)
 
So the car started and moves around but I have a funny feeling that things are still slipping inside the box. I'm going to test the car for some time now and see if the results change. If there is not improvement I think I will have to check the pressure in the entire case and then probably look more at the valve block.

Funny thing I found was "transmission oil ageing: 80%" I am not aware of any oil quality/ageing sensor. :)

Then after everything was topped up to an optimal level I reset the gearbox adaptation settings.

The total cost was around £682.


After we test drove it, it seemed like it was still slipping but it was only for a short amount time/road then everything returned to normal.
After 2 hours of driving up and down - motorways, dual carriageways, hills and city driving there was no sign of FAILSAFE TRANS PROG on the dash.

I declare this gearbox fixed!

The car drives like a treat. It just felt like a crash course in automatic gearboxes since I never opened one in my life.

Now I got the other 5L40-E in the back of the van to pick apart and do some work on it. It came from a BMW but hey it's very similar.

Now considering purchasing the Sonnax tester and repair kit for the future.

Going to do an oil change after a 1000 miles to see what they repair is holding up like.

The car still moves! Took it for a 50 mile round trip and drove like a dream. Gears are crispier than ever. When I switch to R or D there is like no forceful engagement or nothing just so smooth. It even switches gears up on the hill because it is way more comfortable to drag its heavy arse up! Manual mode is good too instant changes. Gearbox breaking is good too. Repair worth every penny.

Great work bitnix. Glad to hear that you’re back on the road again. Do I take it that you didn’t remove the clutch pistons from their drums in the end?

Phil - I didn't remove the pistons as I didn't think it was necessary while the gearbox was apart as the drums didn't show any wear or damage. Besides with the result I got - super smooth engagement and changes - I will give it the benefit of doubt and let it live! If valve block goes I will just get on that next! I like the car and I won't flog it just yet! And I can remove the valve block without taking the box out so that is not so bad. (or post it to you haha)

Saint - I am no expert by all means! And Phil was watching over my shoulder when things got harder to sort out! Besides I've seen his photobucket album and I can tell you I'm entry level and Phil well he is a Jedi.

Disco1BFG - I am chuffed for sure. Never done anything like this just manual gearboxes before.

On another note once I will flog the 5L40E from the beamer I will but the Sonnax toys and a vacuum pump as well as the block holder (perhaps start my little gearbox shop for the RR at least for the TD6).

I am on a hunt for L322 with a gearbox problem now :)
