TD5 issues after remap

The remap guy had a bit of a time with my Defender, had to adjust it three times because it smoked under power.
So now it is great with little smoke. But when under acceleration or going up hill, the engine is not smooth between 2500 and 3000rpm.
I can only describe it as a hammering or "thudding" from the engine which starts at 2500 rpm and clears after 3,000 rpm.
Sadly this equates to 65-75 mph. Not sure what's causing this or if there's anything l can do? It's related to engine rpm not speed, so does it in third and fourth at the same rpm 2500-3000.
It is much reduced when not under load, such as holding a steady speed on the flat or slightly downhill.

I took it to my LR dealer and they said it needed a new MAF unit, which they fitted and the rough running issue has gone.

I only replaced the MAF a few months ago and l bought the expensive one not the £30 one.

However the invoice says they also reset the ECU so my remap has disappeared as well. I forgot to ask them not to reset it if possible.

So now l need to see if the remap guy can re-install it.

On my van l had a Superchips remap and it came with what they called a "Bluefin" unit which you could plug in and remove the remap when the vehicle went in for a service etc.

The unit could also read fault codes.

For some reason Superchips never did one for the TD5 which is surprising as there are so many about.

so is the hammering now goen and if so ask the dealer why did they change the map .if that is what caused the problem (the map) I would talk to who did the map in the first place.had mine remapped by dynachip last week ,original map done long before I had it used to smoke like a steam train under power now smoother than ever been and no smoke screen .cant praise dynachip enough like a new vehicle now

They said the problem was due to a faulty MAF unit, but the invoice also says "PCM software update" which is another term for the ECU.

The "PCM" was updated last year when it went in for something else, so it was probably not needed. I imagine it's the first and easiest thing to try if somebody complains of random running issues. I guess they plug in the diagnostic unit anyway to check for faults and then just push a button to reset it?

That's interesting, strange there is a newer version of software, in my experience most companies just stop working on any software for an item when it goes out of production, as the TD5 is long obsolete now I wonder if this is kind of a last generation software which they still put into earlier units, to improve them.
I am wondering about my TD5 as it had one of those add on chips when I bought it, I took it off but can't help wonder if the ECM has been messed with, the exhaust puffs smoke when I change gear, and the tail pipe is black and sooty inside, even after a 90 mile run.
I wondered about asking someone with a Nanocom to copy their standard map and try uploading it into mine, not sure if the map is locked down to the individual BCM in some way, but might be worth a try, at least it would eliminate that possibility and if it was still the same I would suspect the injectors.

Last year when l took the 110 in they "reset the ECU to factory specification" (it's a 2005 TD5)
After that the engine was much smoother particularly between 2000-3000 rpm and performance was slightly improved.
I imagine the software they use is the last update which is probably from 2006/7.
At a main dealer this costs £100+VAT.
I don't know if anybody else can do it, l guess if they have access to the updates from LR it would be a fair bit cheaper.

I've often thought about a remap, but after reading about all your difficulties it's putting me off! One thing I would want to establish from any company that did a remap is whether I could have another one if I needed a new ECU (had one of those already) or a factory settings reset.

Most people have no issues remapping the TD5 Defender/Discovery, l think mine is just a problem one.

I have never heard anybody who wished they hadn't had it done. Try Dynachip, recommended many times on this forum.

+1 For Dynachip. Did mine runs brilliantly.

You do seem to be having many issues regarding your map. Two different companies now have given you excess smoke and your ECU has been set reset twice.

Have you got a full size intercooler? If not is your current IC undamaged? I had mine mapped and there was some minor black smoke under acceleration but that all went away after fitting a full size IC, now its just a puff when flooring it. Which to me is perfectly acceptable.

Usually black smoke is caused by an imbalance of fuel & air, though it could also be faulty injectors or a faulty injector pump or potentially even the turbo. I would check those thoroughly make sure nothing is a miss then, 3rd time lucky hopefully you'll be alright.

What is your current air intake system?

Yes I thought it must be a last generation TD5 file that they put into your system.
I have a Nanocom and it has the option to copy the software out of the ECU and save it as a file, which can be uploaded again, I have already made a back up of mine.
I don't know if a backup of someone else's file would work in my ECU, I don't see why not I can't imagine the they are the most sophisticated of systems. I have seen modified files on the web you can download and try in your own system but that seems to be a leap of faith to me.

I had a 10p mapped by dynachip without issue, the old girl had 170k on the clock!!! Have recently had my fender 15p done again without issue.

Well, my Defender now runs great, after being reset by LR!
I think it just doesn't like being remapped! The turbo is fine, the MAF has been replaced, EGR removed and Decat, AAP sensor cleaned, intercooler removed and cleaned etc.
I think maybe the injectors are the issue, everything else has been checked and nobody else has had the problems l've had.
Fortunately it performs well in standard tune. As l think l will give up on it now having spent nearly £1,000 in total over the last 12 months.

Have you had your injectors tested? I would just to be on the safe side, as well as the pump.

Also the Britpart ICs are rebranded Sercks, for £350 it aint too bad add £70 for some new silicone hoses too.

Out of interest any faults come up on a Nancom?

My first td5 needed injectors, no code stored the only tell tell sign was a lumpy start up with a puff of smoke. They plugged it in an checked each injector and 2 were dumping loads of fuel in, the tips had gone!! The remap was after the injectors were fitted, I didn't want anyone thinking it was the map!!!!!

l bet that's why mine doesn't respond well to a remap?
I can't get anybody round here to touch the injectors, l wanted it looking at when l first got it....there are two lndys neither want to do it because "once you remove them they often won't seal and you end up replacing the head"
I even tried the LR dealer "we don't really do TD5 injectors as once they are removed from the head it often ends with a bill for £3,000"

Luckily I have a very very good Indy here that I bought all my landrovers from. I have heard landrover even use them with problems!!!!
As long as they are taken out properly, from what I know when they are forced out or twisted that's when problems start.
Is it worth finding a local chap with a reader to see weather the injectors are in limits? That's the easy bit
