Hi, after parting with my TD6 last year I have been missing my Rangie and after working hard and saving my pennies I find myself in the position to be able to get a new toy. I've seen a facelifted 56 plate TDV8 which is a smidge under £11,000. It's a lovely drive but with 138k miles on it I am worried it might end up being a money pit. My old TD6 needed a gearbox, is the TDV8 gearbox a better unit? I've also heard turbo's fail at this kind of mileage and can be many thousands to fix. Whilst I am fully aware you can't run these motors on a shoestring budget does anyone out there have experience of higher mileage TDV8s, and an idea of the probable failure points. Vehicle has full LR history
I suppose I could get some kind of extended warranty but are they worth the paper they are printed on?

it all depends what sort of previous life its had,a well serviced car at 138.000 is far better than one say at 90,000 that hasnt been service correctly and abused

If it's enough to make you think twice, imagine how hard it will be to sell on with an even higher mileage, if you don't intend to run it into the ground.

The headline here is 11 grand for a 10 year old car
At that age and mileage you should be paying disposable income. You can thank consumer credit and range rover wannabes.

At this year and model with less mileage i think you will be paying more than 11 grand ,even for a car over 10 years

RR looks nice in the pics.
78k miles in its first 3 years and about 15k in the past year.
Mixed reviews on the dealer.

Sounds like a reasonable deal, there are a fair few over 150k miles and some over 200k miles now. Gearbox in TDV8 is much stronger then TD6, although LR states change gearbox oil at 150k, most suggest a change at half that (75k miles) to keep it is good condition. Turbos have caused problems, some suggest that turbo problems are linked to EGR problems. As long as you fix any problems as they arise turbo failure is unlikely (in many cases a problem starts with an intermittent fault which can be cleared by shut the engine off and restarting - best way to cause further damage). Intercooler hoses and alternators are weak points which can cause problems at about 80k miles
