Series 3 How should the MOT tester test my handbrake.

I wondered this when the man was testing mine, he strapped the effiency tester into my series 3 and drove along the yard behind the workshop and stamped on the foot brakes, both fronts locked immediately, much to his surprise! and passed the footbrakes, then reversed back, I wasn't sure what he was going to do next, but he booted it forwards and ripped up the (what i always call the parking brake)! he passed it too, I wasn't impressed at the method though.
 
I don't know if this is the proper method or not, I would rather they put it on a set of rollers, applied the hand brake and then motored the rollers round until the brake slipped, the rollers would probably slip on the rollers first though, or you could just stop on a hill, but it's all too complicated and specific, to what is a pretty rare setup and it would necer be worth them doing
 
hi the garage I go to pulls up hand brake very slowly keeping hand brake button presed down as soon as wheels lock HOPFULY he lets it go if he does a test driving on road he only goes about 10 miles an hour and does as above

did the place you took it to have rollers? if it were me I would take it somewhere else, the variation in testers seems to be huge if you ask me
 
Aside from testing parking brake with a Tapley you can request a gradient test. It's specifically intended for vehicles with a prop shaft brake.

Needs to hold on a 16% gradient but many testing centres won't have anywhere suitable.

It's by far the most suitable method for tratters.

The damage that can inevitably be caused to the transmission is not always....
Immediate...
It can take a short while to become evident..
This is not scaremongering..but a real fact...
The transmission brake should be applied whilst the vehicle is....
Stationary...and the tester should lightly attempt to push the vehicle
It is NOT a handbrake and the above is the only test I permit...

Bizarrely I can't see 'lightly attempt to push' in the testers guidelines :D:D

Not included in an MOT...
its not a handbrake..
Which are...
You can argue that if you wish
Handbrake on, first gear and lift clutch, if it moves, more testing needed ie slope, if it stays, it passes.

My Landrover transmission is safe in my hands and in the hands of the Garage I trust....for its Mot....

It's not a handbrake which is why the PARKING brake gradient test as noted in the mot testing guidelines specified for braked propeller shaft systems applies :)

Ive twice pulled one of my cars out of an MOT test..
Due to the lets say over exuberant actions of the tester....
I'm a very tolerant person but where my cherished Classics are concerned.....

Its in for its MOT tomorrow...the tester guide I read said rear wheels on roller...button kept fully pressed...lightly pull on brake...release as soon as test fig is reached...

I would much prefer it not to go on the roller.

The guy who tested it last year would not listen...dont know why I didn't stop the test...but it had the poor old girl leal a good 12ins in the air and off the roller backwards...I not kidding...he is not there now...

I will have words before they start.

As soon as I arrived...they asked why I asked on the phone about the last tester...told them the story.inc the bit about it falling off the jack and nearly fallinto the pit...they where horrified...the boss told me he only lasted 2 months before he sacked him...he asked me to please speak up if anything is happening I dont like as I had told him I was going elsewhere if he had still been there...he said I will tell the new tester to speak with you about how you think he should test the park brake.

Could not have gone better.

To test the park brake he reversed very slow and pulled the lever...quite gentle...and it stopped well.

The guy who tested it was a real old school gem...he and one of the other guys where all over it...he was in raptures in the pit under it with his lamp....could not believe its the origin chassis and how good it is.

I see they have changed the emission test...mine is a 1975 and now needs a test...used to be only if made after a date in 1979...but it was less than 1.4 which he said was good...the limit is 3...not sure what gas it is he is testing.

I am a happy bunny....thanks for the advice guys.

Having used the hand brake to do an emergency stop in the middle of manchester once I can say its perfectly adequate at stopping you in a hurry. Managed a good thousand miles out of it before it needed adjusting again. However my rear output shaft oil seal started to pass a good while after and im still not sure if it was this that caused it. Also my rear prop splines are starting to show wear. Again, unsure if that didnt help it

I would really not recommend putting it on when moving though, I think Im just lucky. There is good potential for damage. Garage Im at puts the brake on and lifts the clutch
