Any hints or tips , type of trailer needed for towing my defender, i'm thinking of buying one, have a newish hilux for towing it but not sure about trailer type to buy?

If you just want it for cars, get a low loader car transporter, or hire one.
If you want trailer any way, or can borrow, one of these is very suitable, I have towed a few landies.
Any trailer capable of carrying a large vehicle will need a 3500kg rated vehicle. Not Hilux, they are crap. All landrovers except freelander, Land Cruiser, LWB Shogun, there are only a few.

well thats not cheered me up

Why? You have got a landrover, just need to get it on the road.

I tow all the time, so I have nice trailers like that. If I just wanted a one off vehicle move, I would google round vehicle transporters. Probably someone will pick that up for you not too dear, loads cheaper than getting a trailer.

It will be needed to towed to the test centre. hang around until the test is completed, return it back, then i dare say make yet another trip to the test centre after a couple of visits to my local garage and back and so on, i reckon a second hand trailer that i could sell later would be cheaper and way more convenient than hiring someone day after day.

A trailer that I would want tow a landy on would cost a minimum 2k secondhand. The flatbed in the picture was £3100 new and that was without the rmps to load a car, they are £500.
Any you dont have a tow vehicle, until the landy is ready.

Why are you taking it so far? As I understand the rules you are allowed to drive it to and from an MOT appointment, though it needs to be reasonably close. I assume that if you are ready to MOT, then you think it would be safe on the road.
Try looking for a transporter service (breakdown firm?) in Lichfield who would come out and pick it up for you, leave it with the MOT place for 48 hours, and then bring it back (if it fails).

Op isn't taking it for a "normal" MOT

Regards it being unregistered when buying ex mod bikes you can ride them to the test centre insured on the vin/frame number, they don't like it but you can and the insurance companies will let you insure it for 10-14 days as to be issued a reg number it has to be insured mot'd etc

As old fogey said i believe you can drive to a pre arranged appointment. MOT or SVA my uncle drove his kit car to his without any issue and he is one for researching this kind of crap and following the book.

I used to drive jap imports from Co Durham to a palce near Manchester for sva/iva. We never had no problems with plod no number plates nothing the cars where coverd on a trade policy. Was told by the vosa as long as its booked in and insured then thats fine no need to transport it.

aye but i mean for the sake of a few trips, just hire one.

If they are available. Round here there is no easy way to hire a 4wd with 3500kg towing capacity. Or at least, I have never found one.

Easy to hire the trailers, though.

I think upcountry maybe a bit better. A mate that works towing trailers uses D4s hired by a specialist frim oop Norf. They aren't cheap, though! He doesn't care cos his work are paying.

A 110 weighs a bit over 2 tons. A suitable trailer will weigh 800 to a 1000kg empty. you need a trailer plated at 3500kg. So anything not rated to tow 3500kg won't do. In other words to tow a Landy on a trailer you need...................A Land Rover!
