Hi Landypals
I currently have original steel wheels and all terrain tyres on my 90. I want to invest in a separate set for off road use only and I'm looking for advice on best choice of tyres. I will probably buy 16" modular steel wheels with either 235/85/16 or 265/70/16 tyres. I don't at this stage want to modify suspension. So for off road use what do you recommend in terms of actual tyre brand and size of tyre? I'm bewildered by the choice available and getting a bit lost in the detail.
Thanks, as always appreciate your thoughts.

Cooper Discoverer STT for me. Reasonably priced and proven to go everywhere all others have gone with more expensive boots.

Insa Turbo special tracks or their Fedima cousins. No point in goind for any all terain tyres....they just cant cut it :)

I put a set of new Cooper STT on my 110 a couple of months ago. I drive in a lot of mud every day with and without trailers and I'm very, very impressed with them. They can be had for a very good price too. Only thing I can't comment on is longevity but I'm hoping they'll do OK.

Thanks will have a look at these two. I think I might be stating the obvious here but am I correct in saying that the 265's are wider and therefore grippier in the mud than the 235's?

There's not a vast amount in it some will say skinnier tyres cut through the mud to something solid beneath it easier whilst others will argue that 265's have a bigger surface area to stop them sinking in as deep in the first place. To be honest it's a bit of a personal preference

Brilliant, thank you for your words of wisdom guys. I think I will def go for the bigger tyres but will have a think about whether to go for the Coopers or the insa turbos's

I have BFG mud terrains for off-roading. They're brilliant in mud, but are quite expensive and you may find the Insa Turbos brilliant as well. I also have a set of Hankook Dynapro A/Ts and they are terrible in the wet and disastrous in mud. Definitely go for a mud spec tyre if doing more serious offroading. All-terrains are great for everything apart from mud and very wet tarmac.

If you have a look on paddock's there's only a couple of quid difference between the cooper stt and those horrible noisy Insa special tracks. Proper new tyre vs. remould? Decent on road performance vs. scary handling? I know what I'd be getting.

Just re read the original post and yes it refers to purely off road use. Does this mean not driving on the road at all? Changing your wheels over when you get to the dirty bits? If you're not going on the road at all put dumper tyres on it.

Yes I plan to change them over for off road use only. Sorry I'm still learning this stuff. What do you mean by dumper tyres? Can you give me an example please?

Good plan! I have separate wheels and tyres for on the farm and road use. Obviously there is an interchangeability between the two, mainly I use the muds in the winter, ATs in the summer.

I would think he means V treads, like on a tractor.

They are very good in mud, at least they are on a tractor. But I would think they might be hard on the halfshafts on a landy. Check out the Fedima and Malatesta remoulds would be my suggestion. They arent too silly in the mud either.

But you dont need tyres like that unless you are planning on heavy off roading, ie trials or pay and play. ATs or a moderate mud tyre are adequate for mixed use and laning, etc.

Like tractor tyres. Very large open tread. Unbelievable traction in mud but like turboman said you'll probably start breaking halfshafts etc. You can get them in 16 inch sizes that will go on LR rims.
