Hello,

This may sound stupid but what actually allows a defender to go wading through water with it splashing over the bonnet whereas any other vehicle would just fail?

Its the bow wave effect, essentially the water/wave is at the top of the bonnet and then sharply drops down the sides of the wings and misses the air intakes, correct speed is important not to slow and certainly not to fast, but if you are going through a flooded tunnel or steep banked puddle this wont work and you will stop pdq!
They are not as water proof as std as people think.

As standard I would say half way up the wheel is safe if moving slowly in still or slow moving water. Any more than that or fast flowing water and you have to know what you are doing with regards speed and situation as what Lynall says.

I think you will find standard safe depth is to the top of the wheel rim.

That is so but start them off gentle.:)And when your bum gets wet you know you are too deep:(;)

I remember last time I got wet, I climbed back in from the bonnet and slammed the door, forgetting the car was full of water and promptly got soaked through from the tidal wave shutting the door had created!
