Aaron's 90 rebuild (round 3)

I thought my prep was good, but it hasn't turned out that way. Nowhere near as good as yours, marra. Axles and radius arms are starting to come through and so will all need to be done again in the future. They've just stood for a year on the rolling chassis, never had any hard weathering!
For me, it would be doing things more thoroughly. Having said that, I would galv a lot more stuff next time. Having done one, I know what I would want to get galvanised. So would strip down the lanny, blast all the bits I wanted doing myself and off to the galvanisers. Experience is a wonderful thing :) I'm still currently suffering from a lack of it on my first rebuild  :(

My prep may look better than it is, but that's why this time around anything that isn't being sent for galv is being painted in primer and top coat, so should I miss anything it shouldn't come through, top coat I'm still using rustoleum as I love the stuff, but the primer is corroless and at 3 times the price of the top coat I'm hoping it keeps everything at bay.
And yes experience helps, we never stop learning, I'm still learning every time I start another, I like to have a little change come a new project, have new ideas, learn something new (i.e spend more money)
I just hope my memory serves me well this time around as I have more stuff in pieces than ever before

I know you've bought extra axles, but you've got a canny collection of extra brackets and bits there, mate. :)

Cheers :) Just stuff I've accumulated over the years, stuff I've bought and never used or the project I never finished (or really started) last year, some of it I've no idea where it even come from.
Thought I may as well get it all cleaned up and sent for galv instead of just sat in boxes in the shed where it'll never get used.

Shot blasting is the way to go for prepping parts for paint or galv.

When younger I spent a year as a shot blaster, did anything from alloy wheels (very carefully, from a distance) ready for powder coating, to rusty old steel to be zink coated (sprayed on not dipped), but mostly new steel playground equipment ready for paint.
It gives an excellent key for all of the above.

If I was doing a rebuild to the standards that some of you go to then a blast cabinet would be a must.

I'd agree with that, maybe next time around though, as I don't think my compressor will keep me going for very long and don't want to buy a bigger one just yet.
Plus I don't really have anywhere to do it at the mo, hopefully I'll have a bigger garage next time, or I'll have sold some ****'e and can do it in the shed. That's the thoughts anyway.. whether it works like that is another thing altogether

Well that's the project plans up the shitter. Rang Richards' today to see how soon I could get a chassis, bloody 10 weeks lead time :(
Marslands aren't taking orders until after christmas, so which ever way I look at it I can't get one until new year.
Ideally I would have liked one for begining of December, but would have settled for anytime before christmas.
Bugger! My own fault though, I have been putting it off for well over a month, complete ****ing idiot I am! no idea why I find it so hard to pick a phone up, sigh...
Meant to be off work most of December which is the worst thing as that's when I planned on cracking on with it.

If you plan on using steel shot then where ever you keep the cabinet must be dry, nothing worse than a sold lump of rusty shot.

300 TDI Chassis are out of stock at LRS... :( They are however ALOT cheaper to deliver than Richards themselves so ill be ordering soon as!

im with you on the phone problem!

Aye, I 'kin hate phones

Keep an eye on ebay etc as sometimes they pop up in private sales

It's worth a shot, will keep an eye out :)

Ah, ermm... I'd not got as far as looking into it, decided it's a no go for me at the mo.

AARON, lrs have richards 90 chassis in stock mate.

I did think that having seen them a few months back, but have had a look at his ebay store and doesn't have 200tdi 90 chassis listed, oh and he wants £250 more than buying direct
To be honest I think I'll have to wait unless I'm really lucky to find one.

Still cheaper even though he's more for the chassis to start with? I know Richards' want £75 to deliver to me, all of 11 miles

Richards want £200 to deliver for me and LRS want £60...

I scower eBay 3 times a day for a Galv 300TDI chassis lol! But ill only buy one off someone else as long as they got the receipt!

I'd ring Richards and see if there was any way to get it quicker.....when I ordered mine i said I was looking to get it at end of July....they said they had a 8 week lead time which brought it to mid August, but they'd see what they could do. Ended up getting it 20th July or something like that.......you've nothing to lose!

Hmm... Do LRS quite realize where you are.. Seems very cheap, wouldn't complain mind. They're less than 10 miles down the road from me, so may give him a call and see what he's got/can do.
Not got chance for ebay unless I'm at home, I don't have internet on my phone, I'm kinda' stuck in the dark ages

I rang them on Tuesday bud, they was adamant it was a 10 week lead time and everyone was asking if they could get them sooner :(
She said they was guaranteeing them for christmas when ordering last week.
I know when I rang them last year they told me 8 weeks, and when asked if I could get it any sooner they sold me someone else's who wasn't collecting for a while.
Ended up collecting it 2 weeks later, was hoping for something similar this time around, would have been chuffed with start of december, or before christmas at least.

Some come up on ebay but they are mostly td5. I have as a saved search so will let you know if I see any but they are mostly td5.

Aaron just thinking out loud. The lr center in speke liverpool have a rolling chassis on display. No idea what it is or if it's for sale but might be worth a phone call.

I e-mailed them with a postcode so was quite surprised really! To be honest if I can get one soonish then great, but other than that I am happy to wait till after Christmas I guess! Hope you sort one soon dude as I want to read your updates! :)

Good thought, if I didn't already have everything, or had started painting stuff I might have been tempted, I already have 5 axles

Yep, I'd be surprised too! Out of interest, did Derick (lrs) say if he was getting anymore 'stock'?
Cheers :) Hopefully I can got one, if not, hay-ho, lesson learnt! No much I can do about it now.

So after deciding doing my own blasting was a no go, I thought I'd give it a go with the wire wheel on the grinder.
Started doing a few bits on the floor, that was no good, it's how I usually do it, but it was non stop and awkward, so I decided to get my work bench (old kitchen worktop) from the shed, cut it down and make it fit in the garage, which wasn't as simple as it sounds, needed to move tool box, but too heavy full, so had to empty it all to put all the chuff back
Anyway, bolted the vice to it and away I went, much betterer! And I now have a little work bench area in the garage, something I've been meaning to do for ages.

Didn't get much done after the ****ing around, but got an hour or so.

Started again this morning, someone made a lovely job of repairing this exhaust mount o_O

Rad frame.

And this is where I'm at after probably 5-6 hours at it, bet the neighbours love me today
To be honest, I've got stuff back to bare metal I thought I would have to pay someone to blast, ok it has been a scruffy, horrible time consuming job, but I'm actually struggling for bits to do unless I start striping the engine/gearbox or transfer box (which I also gave a little clean on Saturday) so may as well spend the time doing it.
Still quite a few bits to do yet mind
It's by no means perfect or as good as blasting, but it's ok and should do the job..

All the painted stuff is starting to take room up too. Not only that, it's getting covered in shit'e!

Oh, and the stuff I primed last week I put the top coat on during the week, plus re-assembled the handbrake assembly.
