Rust Proofing, Done any?

Hello all.

As the title says. Any hint's and tips welcome on what to remove to get to all the places that tin worm can set in and eat away at my FL1. I was looking at getting behind the Black plastic wheel arch panels and Bumpers, but is it a major strip down?

I would like to keep this 03 TD4 as long as possible as it's been a Great servant, now having near the 100 Thou miles on the Clock and very tidy body work.

They seem particularly bad under the bonnet where the chassis runners go through the firewall.

There's a natural water catch bucket in them, mine have started rusting so are going to get walloped with hammerite.
 
Take the rear wheel arch plastic liners out. You will need the wheel off and take out the plastic rivits. There is a terrible mud trap in the rear end of the sills....

Also check the sill drain holes are not blocked else they rot from the inside. The rubberised paint on the sills hides rot well. Suddenly you find this....

Spent 5 hours under mine this afternoon , brushing waxoil on front brake pipes removing rust and sorting the side runner brackets , also did the jacking points and checked the sill and door drain holes , got to say gettin to old for this , feeling it now ! But feel better knowin its done , round two tomorrow !
 
Most of cars are not as bad as that red one.

My L-series got some rust on chassis rails just under steering rods holes (on sheet overlaps) , Td4 have standard tailgate problem under number plate light, but I'll replace tailgate soon.

I look under plastic sill once a year (on 5dr) and removing a lot of mud/dirt from there, and put new layer of wax.
Also i put a lot of wax in to the sills via access holes (from inside of cabin), and got 2yrs old protection layer on underbody (still looks good).

Will do this next year on Td'03 - but there stock protection still looks fine
 
What about having it waxed professionally by a company using waxoyl. I know it's expensive but if you don't know what your doing like myself it may be worth it?
 
I have never ever seen a freelander in that condition like that red one do you live near the sea or do you run in the sea water when you go there as that will cause that problem .
 
No, but I have since welded up one other that wasnt as bad but well on its way and I have seen another one locally that has sills that look suspect.
The rubberised underseal hides a lot of horrors and I think that quite a few UK Freelanders will have the inner structures festering like that ready to break out through the outer skin soon enough.
