Series 3 Name That Rattle

Evening All...

I'm hoping this will work, Ive recorded the annoying rattle that's coming out of my ser 3 petrol engine...

If any one can identify what's causing it (latest suggestion is the cam shaft / followers etc) It would be great!

its been like this for the last 8 plus years and the former owner didn't do anything about it.... well it time its sorted!!!

Download doesn't work properly. Seems you used an M4a format which plays with no one :-( but then isn't this a google product? No wonder it doesn't work... still as I only use Linux then I jigged it a bit and managed to hear the sound.

Still not 100% on the answer but cam rollers etc. are not a bad place to start

Yea, that's a really nasty sound. As above, cam followers, check in yer timing case also. Reason being, i had a chain guide snap off and was then sitting in the chain, that was creating a knocking, check yer big ends, crank, those sorts of areas.

sounds like a valve so check push rods , followers and rollers

all the timing bits have been changed as thats what we thought it was. Have the followers and bits just need some time to pull the head...

A similar noise can occur with a worn Rocker Bush and Rocker shaft! Easily rectified with a new shaft and Rocker Bush! The latter has to be Reemed but no problem with care and an adjustable reemer of the correct size.
A large screwdriver can be used as a stethoscope to identify where in the Engine the noise is coming from! Just be careful of the fan blades! Kind regards. Chris

Gonna sound like a dumb question, but have you tried running it with the valve cover off at low idle and touching the rockers in turn? Did that on a pesky RV8 rattle once and it let me track it to a punched-out rocker arm. Isolating the problem to one or two valves might make it easier to figure out.

Actually the pushrod was off its rocker. Engine ran fine!!!

Actually, i've seen that happen. Had a valve stick in a 2.25 petrol and though lumpy it drove 30+ miles home with no problems. Pulling the head and dealing with the ****-poor reaming job the machine shop did on the valve guides was another story...

Well im covering all bases. I got another garage to rent so I can do the work under cover (even if I have to pull the roof off) Im collecting a new (well new to me) engine this weekend so, I'll change the rocker as I have a replacment and if its still knocking ill swap the lump............. then I can pull the old 3 ber one down to see whats happening.......

SO, can 2 people lift a ser 3 lump out of the back of a van without risking personal damage???

Never felt the weight so asking before I try

Yes but use your nonce!
Slide it down a scaffold plank onto a trolley or something, I've got a 4 wheeled low trolley that was once one of them tall shelved things they have at supermarkets etc. You can also 'walk' the engine along the ground, quite quick once you get the knack.

Its VERY heavy!! I would be inclined to use an Engine crane with one either side to guide and lower gently

cam followers are the greater problem not rockers or shaft

Hi and thanks for all the feedback.

I have a new (second hand) rocker assembly
New cam sliders rollers and shoes (Will assess the cam shaft when lump is out and head is off)
New set of big end shells and all the gaskets to swap it all over.

Once the new lump is in I’ll have the original 3 bearing lump on a stand and clean, strip and rebuild it, then lay it up until its needed or the landy is sold (doubt I would swap it back but would be sold with it.)

No engine crane to hand but I have a man that can to swap engines over and he has all the kit!

So pleased I have somewhere to do the work, will take my time, clean and repaint as I go, something I just couldn’t do at the side of the road… not where I live
