Freelander 1 custom exhaust time ;)

Started reading about the vortex exhaust parts an am thinking of using one of those instead of the back box an maybe even both? Also emailed the aero turbine people about a quote hmmmmmmmm

Size of the box alters the noise emitted but, providing the box is an absorption design, won't make much difference to power lost. I did extensive testing some years ago on this. The difference between an absorption pack of 12" long and 24" long was so minimal, it was almost undetectable. What makes a difference is how the silencer is constructed. If the silencer is constricted at the joints, like many are, flow reversion can occur and power will be lost.
It's important that the pipe diameter doesn't alter down its entire length, this includes the bends. Crush formed bends constrict the pipe diameter and so impede the flow gas. All bends need to be mandrel formed to maintain pipe diameter to the chosen ID.

I would avoid anything that proclaims to do all the Vortex says it will, especially if the likes of Edd China has been paid to promote. You won't get more power per £ than the system I've described above. Trust me, new fangled and expensive things simply don't work.

So mate if it was your Freelander td4 an you wanted to get the most you could out of it considering all the mods im doing what exact exhaust system would you go with from the turbo back? An why?

If I were doing the exhaust, I'd use 2 boxes but I don't like exhaust droning noise on the motorway. When I was in the car modification game, I used assemble my own systems using Jetex exhaust components. They are not super cheap but quality is assured.
I'd use the factory cat but with the substrate removed. This will help reduce curiosity from the Mot tester. The rest of the system, I'd construct using 2.5" Jetex straights, bends and a couple of boxes to mirror the original route. While doing the system this way won't necessarily be cheaper than something like a power flow, you can guarantee the quality.

Vortex exhaust on my 944 turbo gave me noticeable torque increase low down. The system does not drone and is actually quieter the quicker you go (running 320bhp)

The results you notice are dependant on the system that was previously fitted.
You'll struggle to better a correctly designed, straight through system. Even if the manufacturer of "special" exhaust systems say otherwise.

Couldn't help myself lol, going from the turbo back into a dummy cat then the vortex where the old middle silencer was an the small back box

Isn't it a bit like having a loud pipe on your bike- the faster you go the faster you leave the noise behind you

Interesting read mate an appreciate that, it makes me feel better as in doing it in the right order hopefully

Ok my beautiful new exhaust is now on, shes 2.5 inch diameter, dummy cat then vortex exhaust piece then small back box an she sounds wicked... Not really louder but a deeper tone an you hear the turbo whistle up ad shes compressing the air.

really really impressed with the company that did it an well worth it, she also seems to be alittle more responsive which is a nice plus

Got to setup a photo bucket account an get some up of my beauty too, looks decent though mate an love the little whistle of the turbo that i can now here, you do notice the difference too when driving an diffo more responsive.

Rimini id also agree with you that shes very quiet a high speed although she does now sound abit deeper which i love, an she only has a tiny back box now
