Hi,
My td5 discovery is pain to start when left a few hours. It was fine first three weeks I got it, so check the fuel pump and found it to be cracked right across the bottom, so the replaced with genuine one.also changed filter and none return valve plus bleed valve, still having starting problems noticed black bits in the fuel filter looks like gravel.

Can anybody help

After its started does it idle ok? If when idling it starts to miss and eventually stops its an indicator that your injector seals are going, unless you have already changed them!

Hi mark
No it runs fine it's done 118,00 with ten stamp in the book reg valve was done 18 months ago when I changed the pump it was cracked right across the bottom and there was a black grit in the fuel filter.

Is battery full charge. Is starter lazy my 300tdi had the same issue i spent weeks changing all the fuel system as starter was a decent 1 but it was lazy hanged starter and fired up straight away so may be worth a try

remove the switch or plug from bottom of filter, placer a container under it and switch ignition on, it should pour diesel out in a smooth stream anything else pump needs cleaning or replacing

I changed the pump last week and gfitted new battery two weeks ago when I changed the filter air did come out out of the blanking cap and when I got it there was cable ties holding right side fuel lines on, I cut them off and footed new valves . And I have changed the filter three times in as many weeks. and every te black bits like grit come out of the filter, so I am thinking air escaping plus contamination in the tank.

but have you tried to see what fuel flow is as i suggested a new part doesnt mean it cant be faulty or whether its been blocked by contaminants in tank (black algae isnt uncommon and blocks pump),its fairly easy to check tanks clean when pumps out as well as the screens around the pump, system is pressurised so youll only get air if injector washers leak or pumps sucking both air and fuel
