Does anyone here add any sort of lubricant to the fuel for series diesel engines?

I have read that the older injection pumps can suffer excessive wear when used with the modern diesel sold today. This fuel is designed for modern common-rail systems running at much higher pressures than a CAV pump runs at. Apparently it's lubrication properties are not as good as the older type.

I seem to remember reading that some people add two-stroke engine oil to the fuel.

Does anyone here know anything about this? What do you use?

I believe this subject has been debated at some length ; perhaps a search under fuel additives might yield some info.. I personally put one aerosol plastic capful of low ash 2 stroke oil in with every fill up. I've read on here that it does no good at all but whether it's snake oil syndrome or not my various old engines seem to perform better with the oil in.
 
Diesel is an excellent lubricant. Try going around a roundabout in wet weather that has had diesel spilled on it. :D:D:D
 
I spent many hours wading through threads all over the net about this.basically when they went over to low sulpher diesel they removed some of the lubrication as well.
The very earliest low sulphur in the US was a disaster causing injection pump failures all over the place that was corrected but in the mean time it had been found that using 2stroke oil in diesel cured the problem.
You are right in that new diesels don't require 2SO as they are designed for the new fuels.
Since then it has been found that 2SO reduces smoke from the exhaust, and slighlty quietens the engine. I can vouch for the fact it does reduce smoke on an old engine and is slighlty quieter. It must increase the lubrication of the pump as well it is designed for lubrication, whereas diesel is designed for fuel.
Remember Modern 2SO is meant to be reduced smoke not like the old stuff that used to leave a blue cloud behind a moped.
The general recommendation I've found say 1 part 2SO in 200 Diesel. It does take a couple of full tank fuels of the mix to take effect.
I use green 2SO from comma, so if you get stopped you haven't got traces of red in the fuel, I know they use chemical checks now but it does stop them confiscating your landy till they bother to check it properly. I carry a small bottle of the stuff that will give the right mix for half a tank of fuel. I also put in an extra dose or two a couple of weeks before the MOT.
Most of those who are against it, (take any combination of the below statements)
A, have never tried it
B, believe everything manufacturers say
C, have modern vehicles that don't need it.,
D, dismiss anything anyone else says anyway.
 
I've been putting 2-stroke oil in every diesel engine I've owned for years now.

The old truckers' trick was to use ATF (Auto Transmission Fluid) but these days the preferred liquid is bog-standard cheapest available 2-stroke as used in lawn-mowers, chain-saws etc.

You want low-ash mineral oil - not any fancy expensive synthetic stuff.

Asda, Tesco, Wilco and others sell a perfectly good oil very cheap.

The accepted ratio is 1:200 so it's 250ml to 50 litres.

that's interesting, I have quite a bit of atf that isn't getting used, maybe I shall stick some in the s3
