Ah right, personally I'd rather archives were guides to follow and if more help is needed ask in the open forum to help stop archive threads becoming the same question asked repeatedly and too long to be readable but up to you.

I'm not so keen on locking down forums so people can't post replies, doesn't it defeat the purpose of a forum system? Anyway, I'm willing to change it, lets see what others think.

The old how to system was locked down.
I thought the idea was guides were complete and clear to follow without the general discussion/arguments/someone asking wot size tyre....

it would be useful for posts with corrections/other members experiences.. but you do get a few who will post rubbish, diluting the content.
how about letting them post but mod it to trim fat? if it get's silly levels of rubbish in a few months, then lock em down

Its a bit of a catch 22... I think how to guides should be locked down.... as they are clear and decisive. Buster Bus does some awesome ones as there is no ambiguity and no spoon feeding. Its just this is what I did and how I did it with a great set of pictures for each person to interpret as they wish.
General forum sections.... ask your general questions and queries over and over. Its tricky as some forums remove all posts older than 2 years, do you really want the same question asked again and again.
Personally I think if someone wanted to go to the holy grail of landrover they would use the workshop manual, the reasons for the forums are for interaction and queries. Especially when the Workshop manual "simply unscrew and remove X" turns into a 3 week task.

Trimming fat would be a massive task and you'd need more detailed knowledge to edit than to write a clear guide in the first place.
As it was if ammendments needed making then a member could post and a mod approve the post or open the thread for editing and close it again.

I have not read all of these posts but there are some in there that give incorrect advice. The guide to changing diff pinion bearings for instance does not give the correct backlash set up advice. Other than an comment by JM which is correct. Personally i do not like the idea of bodges being regarded as tech advice.

I'm with BB on this one, i think these guides should be locked down. The ones i have used on here have mainly been by "blunderbus" ,thats probably not right but close enough.
To many people adding relevant and not so relevant posts would make them hard to follow.

treat it like a article and forum setup?
lock the tech thread but link to a 'discussion thread' in a sub 'discussion' node. any comments/mods that are important can be modded in the guide.
stick a lil message saying 'report' any inaccuracies. mod then fwds to OP or if OP is gone, then edits and checking the report is legit.

wouldn't need any.
people discuss the guide in the separate discussion thread. if some well known guru reports an issue, then they could go on their word and make the edit. else if someone else reports it, mention it in the discussion thread and see if we can group confirm it.

Maybe if you followed the knock the pump about until engine barks then tap back until it stops crap.
