Broken/snapped glow plug

glad it's fixed.

if the engine started fine on the other glows, i would have just left it until the head had to come off for a new head gasket :)

in the future try changing them when the engine is warm

Thanks - I'm happy to have it back! Hopefully I will not have to change the head gasket (haven't read that much about L-series and head gaskets). Fingers crossed!

I actually tried several times warming up the engine, and then using the tool I made trying to remove the glow plug (concluded early on that the tip on the glow plug still was in place), but without luck. It was totally stuck!

Winter will tell if replacing one will do (I know it's summer now, but with the new glow plug, indicator light for the warming up is on a lot shorter than last summer, with the old plug) - if not, I'll have two more replaced (last one really not easy to get to).

Hope for the best :)

easily done. i've snapped them myself. luckily it was still tight and it started fine on the other 3 even in a harsh winter, so i left it ;)

This thread reminds me of some "fun" we had a couple of months back.

Changing the plugs on a TDi300 engine and one unscrewed fine, but stuck. Would still rotate with a lot of force, but wouldn't eject any further.

Would the little b*****d come out? Would it heck...

Piled a load of towels on top of the plug, started the engine with it loose, and it still wouldn't come out. Took the bonnet off, drove it down the road in second gear and as the turbo came in, bang.

The noise when you do that is incredible :) there was a 2" hole in a towel and we never saw the plug again.

Probably very stupid... but fun in that way that lighting fireworks is fun.

Funny! :) Wonder what distance the glow plug travelled...

At a time somewhere in the process, when I got most frustrated, I put a block of wood on top of the engine (to protect the engine cover), direct over the glow plug, and rev'ed the engine for a while in the hope of it shooting out, but didn't work.

Have heard stories like yours before, guess it works sometime, others not.

Did it come out "clean", or did you have to make a new thread?

- And true, (generally) things that go bang are funny!

It came out pretty clean, from what we could see, having said that with the sheer force it came out, I don't think it really would have mattered if it broke up.

Fortunately with my adventure it jammed after the threads had cleared the block so no retap was needed.

Revving at idle doesn't actually produce much (well, comparatively) pressure in the turbo/bores - you really have to get it on the boil under load before the turbo will really get going...
