how to find out wot suffix you got

i'll guess you're talking about your gearbox (which along with the engine could have been changed at any time)

Series 2a gearboxes have it stamped on the side of the top cover, 8 or 9 numbers and then the Suffix under those if there is no Suffix letter then you most likely have a Series 2 gearbox (i know nothing at all about Series 1 gearboxes) i have just obtained a suffixless gearbox for donor parts which is no use to me as the one i'm after reassembling is a Suffix E 2a gearbox :(

Series 3 gearboxes often have the number and Suffix stamped on the transfer case on the sloping edge nearest the gearbox

unfortunately to see either it's going to be a contortionists job with a mirror and torch unless you lift out the tunnel and floor plates
 
The engine number is stamped on the r/h side of the block as you look at the engine below the water pump. The V5 should have it as well. The suffix is part of the number.
