Series 2a - Any idea of value

I apologies for doing this from the start because I always hate the 'what's it worth' style posts, however I am disposing of a relatives estate and am looking to sell there Landrover but have no real idea of value.

What I do know is that it is a H-reg Landrover Series 2a (headlights in the wings) 109 LWB with 3 seats across the front and bench seats in the rear. It was originally in the RAF and has a full length roof rack. I know the owner replaced the chassis and bulkhead maybe 20years ago with galvenised ones and more recently upgraded the brakes to discs, from maybe a buick?? (rockymountainspares?). The vehicle is currently sorn'd but wouldn't need much to get it on the road however the body work and seats would need some TLC.

If anyone has any rough idea of value etc that would be great,

That's not that bad looking. Its had some work done over the years. Looks like it had a tailgate door but there are no cleats for a tilt. Curious looking rear cross membr; it doesn't look like a std military one. Appears to have FWH's as well. Its sitting up OK so springs n shockers must be OK ish. The main oberservation being that it looks like straight S3 rather than a S2a. The wing mirrors, plastic grill & front light postions all are std S3. Is it a diesel or petrol? If the chassis n body are OK and the engine runs then it could be worth £1,000 - 1,500 max. Any more and you'd expect to be driving it away roadworthy. Does the owner have any original stuff included (tailgate etc)?
 
Must be my eyes but can't see FWHs. From the bonnet hinge the bulkhead looks to be S2a. Does it have a central dash panel or plastic moulded jobbie?

If it is a 2a it's probably worth changing the grill back to the original galv as a 3 grill will put a lot of folk off and make them question the id.
 
definitely a 2a bulkhead, possibly a genuine ex-military vehicle (bonnet catches and what looks like holes for door buffers in the wings) along with what looks like a military crossmember and bumpers, i would hazard a guess at underseat fillers for the tank(s) as i can't see a filler point behind the drivers door

to definitely determine it's origins there should be a plate in the cab giving chassis number and quite a bit more space to include other military information (contract plate)

being military it could also possibly have 24v electrics

disc brakes, great upgrade but no mention of if it runs or drives or any remedial work required

don't worry about the plastic S3 grill as that WON'T put anyone off looking at it that knows what they're looking at

yes it's had the rear door changed at some time but again that doesn't really matter

as to value, that's a hard one with so little information and not being in the market for one myself along with no mot and no idea of the work required to get it mot'd, going by the little information we have (and not seeing it in the flesh) i'd say anywhere between 600 and 1200

i do watch advertisements on that dreaded auction site quite a bit and the pricing and values vary crazily (not to mention how many times i see folks saying "bargain" but not actually putting thier hand in thier pocket), you're going to need to see how much similar vehicles go for and know a little more about your one before being able to compare properly

i'd say get it up and running, mot'd ready for the road so all someone needs to do is buy and insure then drive away in it, then you're likely to be looking at 2.5k upwards to the right buyer

Thank you so much for all the help and info, to answer some of your questions -

It is a series 2a, and ex-military as it originally had a T reg on it and he applied to get a date of manufacture reg hence the H reg it now runs.
It has always had the rear door on while he owned it so there isn't the old one to refit.
It has front FWH's (if by these you mean you turn them and then engage FWD in the cab).
It was put onto a galvenised chassis and bulkhead 20years ago and all seems fine.
It has a metal central dash and indeed unseat fuel tanks and fillers.
It is a petrol.

The only reason it hasn't a MOT is because it wasn't being used, I think it will pass easily as the engine, brakes etc all worked when it came off the road.

Also, as you think it had a tail gate, do you think the top is actually a addition and it was formally a rag top when in military use? Apparently when it left the military it underwent some conversion at Jake Wrights LR in Skipton who added the RR and maybe the hard top?.

looks interesting. would need a lot more pics

inside, foot wells, underneath, esp that rear xmember, engine bay

the lights in wings, wrong mirrors and s3 grill will knock money off.

capstan winch i see on the front. is all that working?

a normal s2a can go from scrap value to a few k.

more pics will show its condition, but it is starting to look fully loaded.

if it's all clean, mot and a little work could see a few k on ebay i reckon
 
if he has that, i'd expect to find a bunch of landy parts/spares knocking about. take a pic of them if you find them as they might hold something of value
 
Mmmmm. Could be a good buy at the right price, like the fact its petrol; easier to refurb. End result could be a vehicle of good provenance with autheticity. Good luck if you buy it.

Thanks for all the info and advice, it's been greatly appreciated, in fact (and I'm sorry to disappoint some of you) it's made me want to keep the landrover and spend some time on it to restore it and get it on the road again. As my wife pointed out its been in the family for 32yrs so deserves a second chance, plus she knows I'lll have to sell our dreaded P38 which would please her no end!!

So it looks like I'll be on here a lot more looking for advice etc....

I'll drag it out of where it's stored in the coming weeks and get some proper pictures so you can see how big a project I am taking on, I'm using the blind faith view of "how bad can it be" I mean it can't be worse that a P38 can it!!

it certainly can't be any worse than a P38 (lovely car to drive but a never ending supply of faults :rofl:i'd still like another in some ways )

the 109 is the best size to own for space and comfort as the length and weight stops it behaving like a ping pong ball, i own both an 88" and 109 and for playing offroad the 88" is great (the 109 isn't bad at all) but if i want to go away for the weekend i would generally prefer to use the 109 as i can easily chuck loads of camping gear in the tub including my fire bins and a marquee along with a few luxuries and my cab space needs nothing more than my smokes and a couple of bags of sweets/biscuits to munch on the journey, the 88" needs my trailer when i want to drag all the extra junk when camping (this is to make things comfortable for a group of us when we're off laning/camping for a weekend)

Looks epic, maybe a bit before I'm brave enough to do all that.
