Hi I am new to this site so please be gentle.....I have a 03 vogue 30ltr diesal and the trans failsafe program has appeared on the dash and the car sticks in one gear I assume 4th....this remains like this till you switch off but comes back on as you start off again.....It's been to a local garage which said it was due to low oil in the transfer box due to a leak...so leak was repaired and shifter was bench tested to make sure it was working ok which they say it was.....£300 later drove car home and fault came back so I assume it wasn't that so £300 lighter and no closer to fixing problem could anyone help as garage is saying they don't know what it could be now.. Thanks in advance

First thing to come to mind is find a new garage!!!

The main issue with the GM5 box in the Diesel is it was fitted with a crap valve block that over time wears out and pressure to the drive clutches is lost, the box then eats itself due to burnt friction material and the situation gets worse and worse till it finally says enough is enough and defaults to 4th gear and lets you know it is not happy.

First thing is to check the condition of the gearbox fluid and filter, if both look like crap, odds on it is due for a new gearbox!

Do a search for the very well known gearbox issues that blight the TD6 Range Rover L322....sorry to say, but first get another garage to look at it for you, preferably one who knows Range Rovers and their gearboxes!

The GM box is worse than the ZF in the 4.4 as i understand, search for transmission failsafe program rather than transfer as you will be getting mixed results with transfer box. Combine your search with RRPhil or Bemble on google as he is the guru but not around so much lately as i think he is now cured of range rover ownership.
There are dozens of posts by RRPhil / Bemble on numerous sites with the most in depth information you will find anywhere.

As Saint says, i think the torque converter can start to break up which wrecks the valve block and the rest of the transmission on the diesel GM box. The 4.4 ZF box gives a lot more warning. as he says, pull the filter and oil and if it's full of glitter it's dead.

i have a feeling the transfer box motor can fail in the way that the potentiometer (that was a guess at spelling) is faulty so the ECU doesn't know what position it's in, which will give the TFP warning but the motor could actually still work if connected to a live feed. Connecting to decent diagnostics, certainly T4 testbook would tell you and potentially allcomms.

Disclaimer - i am only remembering what i have picked up off Bemble and Saint, have a good google, all the information is out there as they fail regularly.

if it turns out to be transfer box
ive got one totally complete with all motors etc
it will be cheap
