Snow chain advice please

It's winter here, I'm looking at buying a pair of snow chains. I have 205/70/15 tyres - Bridgestone 697 A/T.

I'm looking at either Konig FLYB 095 OR Pewag Brenta-C xmd 74 or xmr 75.

Guidance and advice please on these.

Yes that was the plan, can you comment on the two options I listed. The Pewag are 4WD/SUV chains, but I'm not familiar with the Konig brand.

Nope - we tend to use socks rather than chains over here as the winters arent bad enough.

And you think a UK based forum is the place to ask about snow chains? That lot don't know what snow is 😝

A decent set of winter tyres are more effective than socks.

Any of those three will probably do the job. Looks like all three of them are "fast chains" and they are relative quick to fit when you have done it a few times.

You also have "spider" chains which are super quick to put on and remove. Which are nice when its below 0C outside.



I myself got a set of quick chains and some studded chains(these are my favourite).

Even though i got sets of 4. Short distances with only chains on two wheel havent been a problem for me. But i only use the chains for short distances and i remove them when i dont need them anymore. With studded chains you can go uphill on slippery ice.

I know that the Pewag Brenta-C are designed for 4WD application [sturdier construction...] but I wasn't sure about the Konig

With NZ being further away from the polar region than GB we tend to have milder winters except here in the heartland where we're higher up - 400 to 2000m+. Snow falls on the roads are infrequent. I like the idea of the socks but know they will disintegrate if used on paved or gritted roads which would be the norm. Our ski field access roads are quite steep and are mainly gravel roads so we drive on a mix of packed snow/ice and gravel. I don't think socks would last long with that use hence my seeking advice re chains suitable for a FL1.

I am afraid I just picked up 4 military surplus chains.

Socks and the spider/plastic clamp chains are ok for short/slow/tarmac trips but if you get uneven roads and anything which might have rocks/edges they will shred in no time. (obviously not a problem if you have a foot of snow).

We have the same issue in Mid Wales, the extra altitude with a bad winter can royally screw it up. They are a useful tool to have for the rare occasion.
