No loss of power but I'm getting the smell of diesel coming from under the bonnet.

I had a look and this is what I see. It seems to be coming from that wire connected to the big hose there.

Any ideas?

That is the maf sensor and the pipe is from the turbo.
By the looks of them they need replacing. When was car last serviced?

That oil is probably coming out of the dip stick. Your crankcase breather filter is blocked. This is not good!
Search crankcase breather to find out how to change it and/or up grade to the BMW part.
Personally I wouldn't drive it til you've sorted it.
Its quite an easy job, but very fiddly, I put the upgrade BMW part in, then you can forget about it.

Eeek! Thanks for letting me know.

the attached pic be the air-intake-temp.- sensor

oil leakage could be from the intercooler hose joins ..
( i.e. those hoses will always have a small amount of oil thru them )
and / or from that sensor housing seat ..
( also check there are no splits or small holes in the intercooler hoses
( in particular where the top one potentially rubs against a bolt/screw head

if oil is coming from the dipstick ..
you can check by running the engine with dipstick removed ..
see if oil is pumping out there ..
that will indicate the crankcase vent system ( filter and valve )
Needs to be cleaned/renewed ..

We did a test with the dipstick out, revved up to 3000 and no oil coming out. It could well be a hose but I'm going to replace the crankcase filter anyway as I don't think its been done for at least three years.
