oil on inside of wheel ?? help

Hi again guys ... well I've got rid of my freelander and upgraded to a 2001 disco td5
Can anyone shed any light into this oil leak I've found near my wheel ? I've took the wheel off to change it and noticed that all inside the wheel was covered with oil !! Never had a car that's done this before and just wondering what I need to be looking at to change ??

i had simalar on my discovery1 failed mot because of it never had it before i filled up the diffs so i let a bit of oil out to stop leak passed mot then sorted the seals out after
 
Hi,Just had the same problem hoped it was the hub seal as they are not expensive.I kept an eye on axle oil level and it didnt move but the oil kept coming so its a hub replacement plenty on here about it part numbers etc.good luck
 
just done my axle seals for the second time in 6 months. your picture mirrors the state of my front wheel.
there have been a few articles on this site and others regarding the size of the axle seals. the seal circumference is too tight on the shaft. the first set i fitted were pattern and lasted 6 months. the inner part of the seal had been ripped clean from the outer. the latest set came from a batch of seals sold in the usa and supplied by a guy on another forum.

This is, or at least "should" be a prime motivator for buying genuine parts!
 
Axle seal.

NOTE - I had a similar problem with a REAR wheel. However, that was the wheel hub itself allowing the axle oil to seep past the bearings and get flung on to the disc. The front wheel hubs aren't in contact with the axle oil - that's why they don't have/need an o-ring fitted when you bolt them to the carrier.
 
Sorry about the delay on getting back to this post as I've been extremely busy at work ... should I go with a full hub replacement ?

Sorry to sound stupid ut I've never had a disco before and never had this happen so looking for what to order and fit really :)

No need for a hub,

The failed seal sits behind the cv joint, with the drive shaft going through it,

I had to make a tool to insert it neatly, as i butchered it with a socket! it leaked of course!

Buy genuine, 8 quid or something like it per seal

Brilliant just had a look on tinted Web and bearmach seal for it in fleaby £4! Is there anything I should be looking out for as I'm taking it to bits as I'm doing it now as we speak .. just wondered if there was any shortcuts around it without stripping all the hub off etc ? Really appreciate all your help :)
 
I would try the seal, but it'll prob be the hub. If hub- have new stake nut(s) and new brake disc retaining screw(s) to hand.
1 hr job to change a hub once you've got the tools and read up on it!
 
as some others have said and looking at your pics. its not the hub, its the halfshaft seal. remove hub and shaft as one unit. unclip abs sensor from under bonnet and feed through wheel arch. i used a 50mm socket to put new seal in.
as i said in previous post, there appears to be a manufacturing problem with the seals. both genuine and aftermarket as has been found by some people on other forums. good luck.
 
Cheers guys really appreciated .. gonna have a bash at it this aft .. I'm guessing the oil will have mostly drained out of the axel through this .. anyone know what oil to refill with after I've done ?
