It's a big investment, but if you're planning on keeping her for a while, a galvanised chassis is the way to go. You're already stripping her down, easier to build it back up on a good chassis. It will also improve the resale value if you do decide to sell in the future. Easier said than paid for, I appreciate!

Totally agree with all that. Not sure about the keeping her though. I have a tendency to do things like this and then get an itch to do something else. I am actually modifying a Vw T5.1 as well at the moment so I'm a bit of a gluten for punishment 😂😂

Went and cleaned a few tub bolts up once I got home tonight and give them a good WDing ready for the next session but I must admit I didn't quier realize just how much crapp gathers up the back of the tub. I had bolts were I didn't know I had them.

So I've been pondering whilst sat in the sun at work and I know this is a long way off, whether to build it pick up as I love the look of a pick up or as I have county sides, seats and bulkhead removal bar whether to build a county. What do you guys think?

See when you finish your rebuild - buy a pressure washer and use it!

Right. Been so busy I only grabbed half an hour yesterday so thought if post it up anyway. Next job is strip the tub down ready for removal. So as time was of the essence I got on removing the rear lights. As you could imagine all was rusty. As in the bolts the Brummie boys hold the reverse and fog light units in with so I had to drill these out. Them removed the brake and indicator units and how these worked God only knows as there was again most of the green lanes and quarries of England wedged behind them. 😩

Then I needed to remove the corner covers inside the rear corners of the tub. This did make me smile as one of the bolts is a Phillips head type bolt stuck through the body just above the indicator. Something I have never noticed or thought what the hell is that there for in all the years I've had
Once removed the wiring was exposed which to my delight as I was finding with a lot in this rebuild is how much better these later defenders are with all there plugs on the wiring. The only other things I've done is a bulkhead swap on a turbo diesel and a rear quarter on a series3. Hopefully this should make the rebuild easier but I am marking up the wiring to for my own peace of mind.

Looking good, mate. There is a lot of corrosion on there though as everyone has been saying. All repairable though. I hope you're rear quarter panels are ok, mine were shot and replacing them was a pain. I've got some pics on my thread of refitting them, but I made a few mistakes.
If you need to take them off, do so very carefully without bending them or cutting them if possible. That way you can check the correct measurements for the new panels. Or, buy a new tub!
