Go and measure the size of the inlet and buy one to suit.
For example mine has a 4" inlet so I bought a cheapo one to suit, until I can source an airbox suitable. People recommended k&n to me but too expensive for me as a temporary measure.
Unless theirs a problem then personally I would stick with the original air box.

I've a K&N in my 200tdi (originally 19j) and apart from the sound it makes I'm not that keen on it. It seems to get dirty really fast and I prefer the idea of connecting an air box to the wing vent and accessing some cooler air!

Also consider fitting an oil catch can to help your standard air filter last longer

You'll regret it, they are noisy and do not filter the air properly. If they did manufacturers would not waste time building air boxes and just fit them at factory. I had some pipework from an engine that had been run with a cone filter, the pipework internals were gritty where it had sucked dust and then it had stuck to the oil to make an almost sandpaper like surface. Heck knows how bad the engine must have been from sucking that in.
K&N's can only boast higher air throughput because they simply don't filter the air as well - it really is that simple.
The 19J will not go any better with one anyway, in fact no land rover engine will benefit from them.

After hearing that, I'm off to dig out the air box I've got knocking around and try and fit it to the 200 somehow. Been meaning to do it for a while and that's just spurred me on!
As I said, I don't actually rate the K&N I've got fitted, gets real dirty and can only access the warmer, dirty air in the engine bay and not the cool, clean stuff from outside! Cooler air is your friend.

I've fitted a 19j engine to a series 3. I fitted the 90 expansion tank, which left no room for the old air filter, hence the air cone. any further suggestions are very welcome!

Could you not use the 19j pipework and mount the expansion tank on the drivers side which is where it sits on a defender?

Exactly. I had the "what air-box will I use" issue with a retrofit engine a number of years ago. My idea in the end was a simple box that took a 300tdi Discovery flat air filter.

Thanks I'll look into that. Fitted the overdrive today so progress, but more slow than sure!
