More like 24", slightly deeper than I thought. Nearly up to top of the wheel rim.

Was in about 15 seconds, about 5 or 10 at that depth.

Will I have done any damage, or should I be OK?

really? i would have thought that depth/time would be fine with no adverse effects. i went up to the top of the wheel arches on the chippy run with no problems in my stock d1

recommended depth for wading is about 20" for a D2 but if you were only in it for a few seconds and moving steadily you should be fine. i think its when you stop in it that it leads to problems. the bow wave keeps most of the water out of the engine bay. if you're going to do it often, get a breather kit, wading plugs and a snorkel to be safe!

I am going to check the rear axle next weekend.

Breather extensions are now a must buy.

Snorkle is tempting
