Hi all,

Fitted a Britpart back box to the 02 Td4 in August 2013 to replace the blowing original one. 16 months later, after noticing a blowing noise again from the exhaust for a month or two, I went under to investigate. It was the back box again. I felt around the box for the leak, and my hand went straight throught the steel, like it was made of potato crisps.

Phoned LR Direct, who initially claimed it was out of the 12-month warranty

Phoned Britpart, who said it was within the 24-month warranty :censored:

Had to return the entire thing at my own expense pending assessment. :censored: I spent a sweaty two hours plating up the old box, which thankfully I had kept.

On reflection, that exhaust probably lasted less than 12 months. Should we not expect an exhaust to last longer than an oil filter? The car isn't worth a genuine item, so what brand is good? Bosal?

Here it is...

Thats terrible!. I thought Td4's would be easy on exhausts. That looks like something thats been on about 10 years.

At least they honoured the warranty i suppose...but that is bad.

Bosal have always been ok for me, but pricey. I guess you get what you pay for.

Britpart handbrake cables seem ok tho..

It looks like it's 20 years old, or been used at sea. Don't speak too soon - they're only assessing it to see if it is indeed f@cked. I did send them the photo you've seen, but rules is rules, I suppose.

Only assessing!!!

That looks like it has been raised from the Titanic!. I can see the problem you may have...whether or not they believe it could be in that state after such a short time?. Bet your not the only one.

Best of luck.

I had one like that it was from Mr Exhaust the local exhaust place told me I insisted on a better make and it was not that much more expensive

That is really bad they have to changed that or refund you surely, I bought this below and zinc sprayed it before fitting, hopefully it will last a fair few years, I took original off as it was blowing from the side only.

they tend to rot inside out, so i wouldn't bother too much with outside protection

Thanks both. Yes, mine seems to have rotted from inside and outside. You could almost argue it wasn't fit for purpose, i.e. being kept outdoors and having moist exhaust gases blown through the inside. The quality of steel and galvanising are so bad I reckon a baked bean can would have lasted longer. Will certainly let you know the outcome.

I wonder if adding 2-stroke oil to diesel would produce oilier fumes and so protect the exhaust pipes

probably cheap chinese steel

I changed a silencer on a car recently, suppliers all told me the same things - almost everything is made in china and its all crap. I had to take the one I bought back as one of the pipes was mis-oriented, so it wouldnt fit. I doubt this is a one-off. Ended up with a Klarius which Im told are "ok" as opposed to "****e".
I suspect that if you want decent youll have to spend loads on a genuine one.
Do let us know if you find out otherwise

Bring back "Made in England"

Ultimate flash or what!?...

Twin pipe stainless from Mr Tyre in Nottingham. For the pampered hippo who has everything...lol!:)
