Well after years of wanting one and a fair bit of guest lurking here I finally took the plunge and bought me a Disco 1 300tdi Commercial. Cost me the princely sum of £450. Figured this is the right crowd for me lol :)
It's awesome! not Much rust which is rare as I understand it. Boots solid! but it's got a few issues that need sorting out.
But I'll cracknonto them later.
I
What I was wondering is:
Is there anything pressing I need to be doing BEFORE I get involved in other tinkering and rust repairs?
Whilst she's in bits and I'm oily best to do any preventative maintainance I can if you suggest any.
I know about the EGR valve blank and it's effects. And I'm aware that this car is desperate for a good injector clean.

I do have the stuck diff lock issue to tackle. But there's a great thread on that I see.

I also have a nasty little feature where you come off the throttle and there a moment of slack no throttle normality then the car lurches forward. But like having a loose chain on a motorcycle. It's like there's A second where the slack gets taken out then the chain catches. Only obviously it's not a chain lol. The engine seems fine in its mounts.. I'm at a bit of a loss.

Anyways hi everyone!!

Hi there welcome! If it was me id give it a damn good clean inside and out so I can see exactly what I've got. Then a full service including diffs, gearbox, engine oil and all filters. Next would be brakes and discs if they are needed once the landy is safe and fully serviced then start taking it to bits to fix rust and such. Good luck and put some photos up!! :)

check the A frame joint as that could be the problem as could general transmission wear, my tdi used to feel like that..... rust rust rust

Should the joint not have been picked up by the mot? It was only done last month! I did think it may be diff play as I've just noticed that it sort of does it when the parking brake is applied

I think what you have may just be what Discos do. They all roll back a bit after you put the handbrake on as all the slack in the transmission is taken up.

Loads on this search transmission backlash. Many many points where drivetrain wears causing this, anything splined or with a uj. Easy win is drive flanges. A frame bal joint or bushes are more of a bang than a clunk. Youll spend £ chasing it down so just live with it

I can't live with it lol. It's really hard to drive like this. You can't drive down a hill in gear because it sorta bounces. in fact it's Very very bouncy at Low speed aswell. I'm sort of driving around it but the catch is that It makes the low ratio 1st unusable because it lurches back and forth constantly lol. Can't downhill crawl. Assuming I had another disco1 with heavy body damage that this problem isn't present on, what would you swap over. Complete transmission and centre diff?
