300 tdi turns over but will not start.

My old disco has been stood for six months after mot fail.I want to sell it now for spares as it has a really good engine rebuilt with only 30.000 on it.
Would not turn over with the key so have run a wire from the starter to the battery and put a switch on dash.Turn the key to the ignition position and then flick the switch and it turns over but wont fire.
I Have not got any ignition lights coming on [ oil/glow plugs] .
Have just fitted a new fuel stop solenoid thinking the old one may have got jammed but no better
It always started first time before I left it so can't be much wrong with it.

Have u tested for voltage at the stop solenoid when starting, is it open in other words?

Sounds like an ignition switch fault or possibly a blown fuse

Thanks guys, I can hear a click coming from the stop solenoid when plugging in so I assume that's working.I now have my ignition lights on the dash [must have done something right] The engine seems to be turning a little slowly so I put the same battery on my other disco and it started no problem. I now suspect its a bad earth?

Once your diesel engine is turning on the starter you only need two other things to start it, 1/ fuel and 2/ air.
It may have lost prime in the injection pump gallery, remove the fuel line from the back end of the IP and pump the lift pump to ensure fuel is present and available, the IP need a full prime to enable starting.
Maybe during the period of lay-up some "critter" may have nested in your air intake plumbing, no air, no bang.
